Built as instructed, the engine is turned by the rear wheels when you push the car along but neither are driven by the electric motor. I was a bit disappointed by this but we managed to fix it.
It's actually very easy to have the motor turn the engine and rear wheels if you know in advance you want to do that. Here's what to do:
When you get to step number 64, leave out the small, pale grey collar that you are instructed to put on the shaft furthest away from you in the picture. That's it.
Now, when you've finished and you want to choose between driving the doors etc. or driving the engine and wheels, just gently slide the pale grey gear wheel on that shaft backwards or forward so it drives either the pale grey gear wheel or the dark grey gear wheel on the shaft next to it. This might be easier to do from underneath the car. You may have to wiggle the gears just a little to make sure the gear teeth slide past each other too.
When the dark grey gear wheel is driven it will drive the engine and wheels rather than the doors etc. and the gear lever won't have any effect on what's happening.
He loves it though and plays with it a lot. He wants me to buy him another so he can build the other retro looking car - i wonder how many other kids are saying the same to their parents - nice marketing there Mr. Lego!!!! All in all i'd say its a great educational as well as fun building toy. He now wants the bigger ones that Lego has just brought out - maybe i'll win the lottery this week!
