The voyage of the First Fleet to Australia has been well documented in the ships' logs, diaries, reports, autobiographies and letters of those who took part in it. The author of LEAVE THE GALLOWS HUNGRY has obviously researched their writings in depth to create a fascinating authentic account of the hazardous voyage via Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town to Botany Bay.
Historical characters are well portrayed and alongside them Stanley Wilson has cleverly and credibly interwoven the love affairs, sufferings, antagonisms and rivalries of the diverse fictional cast. An enjoyable, compelling read. I look forward to the sequel.
I hope it also gets wide readership in Australia, which it richly deserves.

Good read but upsetting when you think of what they went through for next to nothing crimes,so glad I was not born in that century,we are so luckyPublished 14 months ago by Patricia Spellman
Very repetitive. The amount of booze on board would have sunk the ship. Not very practically stored in my view.Published 16 months ago by RTR7
I was expecting something different. It as a kind of breathless style, and not the kind of one that I really enjoy. I guess it will have been well researched, though.Published 16 months ago by Euphemia
