When the tour shuddered to a halt due to "public outrage" the group were left standed and broke in England.
They then went into the studio and recorded one of the finest displays of snarling, spitting and sheer exciting "rock+ roll" ever put down on record.
Unfortunately the mix was so bad that even though critics raved about the songs the sheer energy and power of the record could not shine through.
Johnny Thunders and Tony James went back into the studio in 1984
to remix the original tapes and the result of that is "L.A.M.F REVISITED" a disappointing effort that did nothing for the records tarnished reputation.
This problem has now been rectified by the magnificent work of the people at "Jungle Records".
The record sounds as fresh and exciting as the day it was recorded.
Does it matter now after all these years?
Yes! As a historical document it is a brilliant summmation of everything punk was about and it can still set the pulses racing.
L.A.M.F. in fact!
This is the definitive Heartbreakers, the one we should have had the first time round. Great music played by one of the tightest, sleaziest rock n roll bands of all time. Johnny Thunders may have left the building, but his guitar sound will live forever!!!
Forget the New York Dolls, this was drummer Jerry Nolan's finest hour (and he was by far best musician in the Dolls) the power he projects is unbelievable, like a punk John Bonham. (Many Punk bands tried to do Dolls covers at the time but couldn't because the drum patterns were too complicated) The mix of Walter Lure's expert lead guitar and Thunders unique, sonic sarcastic tone guitar is a joy. Forget the drug stories and the later sad decline of the two Ex Dolls, at the time they recorded this they were unbelievably tight and powerful having practiced / gigged in New York endlessly. This is why they were held in such awe by the Pistols and the Clash and other punks at the time they originally came over for the Anarchy tour. This even more than the Pistols album or Clash first album (great albums that they are) is the real deal. Play it loud.
