I am really happy with this machine and it makes really frothy delicious drinks. It is simple to use and as it is mannual (the Tassimo is automatic) it is easy to get your drink just the way you like it. There is very little cleaning needed and it looks pretty cool in the kitchen too.
However, I do agree with the comment above about the sweetened milk pods, although they are lovely I would like the option to buy un-sweetened ones and hope that they are soon available.
I haven't regretted it.
It's easy to set up. You wash a couple of parts (the included cups and the pod-holder etc.). The machine "warms up" in about 30 seconds and it's ready to instantly boil the water (and it does it well). In fact it's delightful that when I don't want coffee I can instantly get boiled water for my tea.
The pods are easy to use and come in surprisingly few flavours (which is a shame). My favourite so far is the Cafe Lungo (which reminds me of Arabic/Turkish coffee). One of the previous reviews had it spot on when the author commented that the milk pods are too sweet. I'm perfectly capable of adding sugar (or in my case sweetener) to taste thank you Krups/Nes Cafe.
The pods are also surprisingly difficult to get. My local Sainsbury's only stocks one flavour (Cappacino) and many of the machine's stockists (eg Argos) only sell the machines. I imagine there's probably a good licensing reason for this (ie not licensed to sell coffee/consumables), but it is annoying none-the-less.
Luckily the Dolce Gusto website is easy to use and you can order your coffee from there. At £3 for 16 pods (which is effectively eight cups if you're going for any of the flavours with milk) it's still a little pricey compared to the regular kettle, milk and instant/ground beans. And the reward scheme is a little thin. 300 points is enough to get you one box of pods but you'll have to buy 15 boxes of pods (£45) to achieve that sum.
Another little niggle is the staggering number of pods you'll eventually go through and its impact on the environment (all the pods are plastic). It does make me feel a little guilty when discarding the pods.
Overall the combination of price, great-tasting coffee and the fact that it seems to be one of the better entry-level machines on the market (my sister has owned more than one and she seems to favour this one), means that this is a great buy and a good addition to any kitchen/office.
Let me get the good news out of the way first! The machine is everything other reviewers have stated, quick, convenient etc. etc.
Now for the bad news ........... Before continuing please bear in mind the following facts; the average English tea cup holds 175ml, the supplied cup & glass both hold about 250ml, one English coffee cup holds about 80ml. Please bear with me, the point of this is about to be revealed!
One pod of cafe lungo makes 110 to 120 ml of coffee, the more astute of you will notice that this is less than a quite small English tea cup, the espresso pod makes 60ml of coffee (I'm not conjuring these figures up , they're stated on the box!) Two mouthfulls of good to average coffee! It gets worse - should you be so unwise as to buy the cappuccino you will pay the same £3.80 for 8 coffee pods and 8 milk pods (milk? really indifferent creamer) which will give you 200ml of yukky gunge and 40ml of coffee. Latte Macchiato? 50ml of coffee on top of 170ml of gunge.
IT GETS WORSE! The black coffees (espresso & lungo) cost the equivalent of £6.56 for a standard bag of coffee, EVEN WORSE, the packs of coffee and creamer cost precisely the same (£3.28) for 8 coffee pods and 8 creamer pods, you are now paying £58.57 for 1kilo of coffee and by extension, the same for creamer!)! This is closely approaching the cost of the finest coffees in the world - and believe me, Nescafe Dolce Gusto comes nowhere near! When we brought this we must have left our brains in a cupboard! If you like convenience and your coffee on the mild side, don't care what you pay for it then buy it and keep Nestle coffers overflowing!
I wasn't disappointed! I've only tried the coffee's so far, but they are lovely. As good as any coffee shop I've been in. The only thing that I am slightly disappointed in, as I believe has been mentioned by others, the milk pod is a bit sweet with a UHT plasticy taste which unfortunately spoils it a bit.........especially as I love Cappacinos and Lattes. Perhaps if those of us that are a bit unhappy contacted them we might see an improvement in time.
Otherwise a great machine and very quick!
Chrissy
