Ok SAS/Med-Assault arrived in four days, that’s good, it is jet black, excellent as the pack looks a little grey on Amazon’s site. I was initially disappointed by the size; I would not call it a 40 Ltr. I have a 30 something Litre and this pack is just bigger than it. However, I am please that I am able to put my stuff I will need for my day trips; five or so books, a flask, and some clothes and other bits, so I guess it is a genuine 40 Ltr despite its compact look. The material is very stiff and impossible to tear with bear hands, so I’m guessing it’s 1000D (Denier) that’s good as I did not want 600D. In appearance, this hybrid has a sinister military look and is drab enough not to attract too much attention. The two exterior pockets are really big for books etc, the pack is festooned in lashing straps. I am happy that you get a free black Union Jack plastic badge and a black carbineer – nice (you don’t get that with the SAS pack). There are crush straps, back air vent mesh, three holes at the top of the pack for wires, cables or hydration pipes and top grab handle is just a strip of 1000D but very strong feel to it. All important zips are strong and chucky looking and no sticking issues. Of the two packs SAS and Assault packs what I have is closest to the Assault pack; even though I ordered the cheaper SAS pack, never mind.
The only real weakness with this pack is that the shoulder straps could be much longer and thicker and the waist strap could be thinker. But that is about it, I haven’t taken it out for a spin yet will do so this weekend and update the review, but while in house this is great looking feeling day pack for those who need to carry a little more.
The second one has thinner material and is lighter , I suspect its 600D denier not 1000D
I gave my first rucksack to my brother so will make a better comparison when they're side by side
Cutting corners can cost you when your in the middle of no-where . The new rucksack needs to earn my trust or it gets binned.
Just compaired the rucksack against my 120 litre Bergen and I know that has 1000D material and the 40 litre has thinner material !
Since the shoulder straps are not connected directly to the back of the rucksack , having a large pocket between them when you add an internal bladder it sags to the floor of the rucksack . The rucksack is designed to carry the weight on the hip belt in the true military way not the shoulders .
The more I use it the less impressed I am - NO stars
So with the acceptance that I have not yet prooven this with long term use, it does appear very good value.
There are loads of attachment points inside and out and everything feels well made. The zips (often first to go on cheaper bags) look heavy and solid, and the material feels tough. The 3 velco covers for water pouches are a nice touch and these openings could be easily used for headphone wires, a solar panel charger, as well as drinking tubes.
If you want a grab bag for emergencies, a city commuter bag, hand luggage or a tough weekender this is ideal, its a nice size and packs down well although I wouldn't recommend it for long distance hill walking, especially overnighters, as I feel its weight to size ratio doesn't lend itself for long trips, it would do fine for a day out. I do note that the shoulder straps are thinner than I would like for very long periods of use and might cut in with a heavy load, but again they feel solid and it is a tactical bag.
