What a disappointment! As relative newcomer to the Ultra scene (18 months experience), I expected to gain more of an insight into the training and racing methods of the pros. The information provided within the book is so broad and non-specific as to be pretty much useless. I would say that only a complete newcomer to running in general would learn much from it, and quite frankly such individuals would be unlikely to be considering an Ultra! I had hoped to learn about pacing for my training runs (particularly how much walking to incorporate, and whether to prioritise distance or time), about different suggested training plans (not just one broad brush one for each distance), about different nutritional strategies used not just by the author but perhaps by some of his contemporaries, and maybe some of the science of it. Nope. Felt like a complete waste of money - I glean more information free by following the blogs of some of his contemporaries. :-(

Planning my first ultra in May 2016 so have been cramming to get an early steer on training. This book is great. It balances the author's experience as a seasoned and very successful ultra athlete with advice written for the layman. Inspiring and confidence building - a must read for newbie runners who have an eye on events beyond 26.2 miles. The training plans are helpful too and give you guidance depending on your target distance.

An hoenst and pragmatic guide to ultra running training and lifestyle. If you are looking to move from
the boring old road marathons to the freedom of the trails, mountains and coast paths then this is a great place to start.

If you are new to trail running and or long distance running this guide covers pretty much everything you could need to know and more. However if you are experienced or well read on the subject you may not find much here you don't already know. None the less it is still a good read and as the title states it is a field guide and makes a great go-to book for reference. It is well written with plenty of stories from Hal's many races to illustrate his points.

Hal writes with a great love and respect for ultra running but for a beginner transitioning to ultra distance I think there are better books for guidance on structuring your training (especially if you are a very average runner like me) but all the other practical stuff and reminiscences are useful.

I enjoed this book as Hal Koerner is an ultra legend but it is a very simple book and a very quick read. If you are a novice ultra runner then this is definitely worth a read. Seasoned runners will not get much from this book.

Pretty interesting, but also quite basic guide to what you need to consider when approaching ultra-marathons. For me it just scratches the surface on almost every topic, without going into enough detail to be really useful.
Good for beginners, but if you've read any similar books you might find yourself wanting more.
