Now onto the picture quality. This is a 6.1 mega pixel camera which effectively means that all pictures and prints will be incredibly detailed and look absolutely stunning. Colours are extremely saturated and lush, the prints were sharp, vivid and amazing, and overall these were the best pictures that I have ever taken - a far cry from my previous Olympus and Sony Cybershot camera. Especially surprising were the quality of night time pics, which, like ones taken during the day, were almost flawless. Flash is very impressive, and 'Red Eyes' are never a problem thanks to the power of the thing. If you do get the red eye effect, you can easily wipe them out using the EasyShare software (which is a marvel in itself while being simple to use). Here's a tip. This camera comes with 18 scene modes. Things like Beach, Night, Snow, Portrait etc. I strongly recommend using the appropiate mode when taking your pic. It really will liven the image up considerably!
It's not perfect, however. The internal 32mb memory is a major problem. This is totally insufficient and will only allow you to take and store 15 pictures max. Of course this is at 'fine' resolution on the 6 mega pixel setting, and you could store more pics at a lower quality. But why shoot a 6 mega pixel image at anything less than the highest setting? If buying the item from Amazon, I strongly recommend one of the two memory card accessories. The Bytestor Hi-Speed 256MB (£22) will do the job and allow you to store up to 120 pics in max detail. More than sufficient, I think you will agree. Another minor issue is the 3x optical zoom. You should be aware it is somewhat noisy which effectively renders the zoom usless if shooting movies. This is a non issue for me as I just use it to take pics.
Bottom line? This camera has amazing specs and is as powerful of a camera as you'll ever need. I almost deducted a star simply because of its lack of built in memory, but as the camera excells in every other area I decided against it (the memory card accessory is relatively cheap anyway). There are plenty of modes for everyone, the bundled software is easy use, and virtually everything can be adjusted easily. I can't ever image the average camera user requiring anything else for a long long time. Best of all, it's all offered to you at a truly incredible price from Amazon. Buy it now.
Don't get ripped off, this camera is £349 in Argos, £289 nearly everywhere else but I paid £199 from Amazon which was £15 cheaper than the best web price, these prices were correct up to 01/01/05.
I usually do a lot of research before I purchase any hi-tech stuff (I'm a recording studio engineer) but I bought this on impulse and I'm glad I did. It's great for point & shoot, but super if you also want to go technical and have control e.g. manual, program or shutter/aperture priority stuff.
You can even get extra 2x telephoto or wide angle lenses for it (fairly inexpensive), or even a lens hood. I printed some pics off today at my local store and am ecstatic with the results.
Regarding the gripe about internal memory, that's not really a huge problem - it's really only there to get you going. (Most digicams don't work at all until you put a memory card in them!) I would strongly recommend a 1 GB card (about 75 Euros). This gives 500 pictures at 6.1 MP standard comp res, or more than 1600 at 1.7 MP; the latter is surely more than enough for any holiday and still adequate print results.
Not sure about the scene modes, but time will tell. And I wouldn't bother with the Easyshare printer dock - an Epson printer or online/instore ordering is probably more cost effective.
Nice shape, comfortable to hold (not like the silver matchboxes or credit cards you get), excellent software, good web support, clear & understandable instruction manual.
