I am trying to upgrade my knitting skills and already have a varied collection of knitting books but this one is now my favourite go to book.
Many books only show basic skills in a superficial way.
In this hefty paperback Margaret Radcliffe has poured her considerable know how into words and photographs and diagrams that deal with many topics in depth.
For example I am currently attempting to pick up stitches on a curved edge to knit a border. In this book I can find explicit instructions with some photographs showing exactly what the needles should be doing.
I can't find this information anywhere except on Youtube. There are many examples of picking up stitches on the straight……but curved is hard!
Topics covered are many including: Pattern Yarn and Needles, Planning the Project, Modifying Your Pattern, Shaping and Fitting, Borders Bindings and Embellishments, plus more.
I chose this book because I trusted the author from a previous book and I am glad I did.

Invitingly written and well organized, this book will help you become a more confident and successful knitter. Thanks to Margaret Radcliffe's gentle prodding, I now take every precaution to fully understand the pattern (changing aspects of it, if needed), the yarn, and how it's all going to come together before starting a project. While this takes time, I've been saved countless hours of frustration further down the line. Highly recommended.

A thorough book that covers all aspects of making garments in knitting. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to keep a book on instructions to hand when planning and making a garment. Clear photos of knitted samples are helpful to compare techniques. The text is quite dense and might frighten readers who are used to step-by-step instructions, but the detail and information is excellent. A book to keep the knitting bag not the bookcase!

I rarely leave reviews but this book is so excellent I thought I ought to! Mostly books are horses for courses so-to-speak, but this outstanding book has to be for everyone who knits. If you buy one knitting technique book for clear explanations and excellent diagrams then this is the one!

This book is so wonderful. I absolutely love it. I was looking for a book that wasnt just filled with various patterns and the usual knitting info, but something that could help me throughout the process of making any garment, as I like to design and make my own knitwear....and this book by the amazing Margaret Radcliffe is just so fantastic and useful. Its full of everything you could possibly ask about knitting a jumper or cardigan and all the things you might not even think of.
Margaret Radcliffe has jam packed this book with all her knitting wisdom to help the reader improve their skills and make the perfect garment. Even if you don't make your own designs and you follow someones elses jumper pattern this book will show you how to alter anything you're not happy with to make the garment more suitable for your shape or size. For me, this book is a real knitting treasure and a fountain of knowledge.

When you think that you know everything there is to know about knitting, think again and read this. After decades of knitting everything from Aran to Fairisle and beyond this book showed me that I don't know everything and what I do know can always be improved upon. Definitely one for anyone who wants to knit really well finished garments.
