I've watched both the DVD and Blu-Ray versions on a 23 inch Full HD screen and frankly the DVD doesn't not look that great compared to the Blu-ray, so I'm puzzled why there are some who can't tell the difference in quality. Its true that the HD quality may not be on par with other more contemporary series but other than that shouldn't really be any complaints.
I use a video media program called PowerDVD, which is pretty good at showing up the flaws in video files and there is certainly a difference in the level of detail when viewed close up. I also need to turn on a feature called True Theater HD which helps to make DVD's and similar resolution videos look better on a high definition display but still not as good as a native 1080p video. (These are encoded as 1080p BTW)
I had to use this feature with the Knight rider DVD series and other DVD's for that matter but I did not need to use it for the Blu-Ray at all.
There are also color differences in the different formats. Audio is also louder on the Blu-Ray.
Another thing to mention is that with a few episodes in each of the four seasons Fabulous decided to use the syndicated versions rather than the feature length versions. These versions are divided into a two part episode and have credits showing at the beginning of the second episode with certain scenes removed in contrast to the feature length episodes which show everything. The Knight rider 2000 movie is also not included. Fabulous decided to release that instead as a DVD on its own. 4 stars overall because of this.
Looking back, KNIGHT RIDER can be viewed as a sort of microcosm of 80s TV trends and fashions, gathering together the likes of sci-fi (a computerised, talking, hi-tech indestructible car)....action/adventure, crime-busting, cheesy humour, romance ("White Bird" - one for the ladies!)...Pounding electro soundtrack, and of course the big hairdo's!... And all warmly embraced by the assembled cast. Nuff said. So if you have a penchant for 80s TV, you really can't go too far wrong with this one. A warm glow of nostalgia guaranteed!
All in all it'll be a fun few hours for me to go through.
As for the quality of the item, very poor - nearly all of the DVD cases arrived with lugs broken so the DVDs were falling out. Had to buy a whole new set of better cases, so you might want to budget an extra £10 or so into the price for this.
Hopefully some might be in stereo from season 4 but I doubt it. This must be something that has happened at the Universal end the original sound recordings have been lost which is a great shame.
