Using Charlotte Gray's excellent book 'Gold Diggers' as its source material this visually stunning series was recently aired on the Discovery Channel. The characters were 'real' people, at the end of the series we discover what happened to them and it makes for interesting viewing. The cast is strong-in particular Richard Madden and Abbie Cornish and support from Sam Shepard and Tim Roth are worth a mention. The series does not pretend to be an imitation of 'Deadwood' it stands very well in its own right and no one should be put off by the single poor review at the time of writing. The scenery is as much a character as the people themselves, in turns majestic and beautiful, hard and pitiless. You realise just how hard the life was for prospectors and the dirt, mud and jealousy that was part of everyday life for them. Extremely impressive and far from 'average'.

Don't listen to the bad reviews. This show is worth the 13 quid by far. If like me you have become more fond of t.v. shows as opposed to films, as in recent years t.v. shows have vastly improved. Then it's a nice little show. I have nothing bad to say about it. The acting is good, the set designs and production is high quality and no it's not Dead Wood but it isn't meant to be. It's it's own product and worth a watch.

Happy-go-lucky mates Bill and Byron set off from New York to the Yukon in search of gold. Encountered en route are an avalanche, rapids and wolves, but the ultimate enemies prove men motivated by greed....

Visually stunning, this miniseries represents a brave effort - filmed on location, conditions as cold as they look. Less happy is the attempt to cram so much into six episodes of just over forty minutes. Several times there appears evidence of ruthless editing, the final episode especially seeming cobbled together. Some may also regret a tendency to moralize. Without voice-overs, the message is clear: there is far more of value to life than material possessions.

Acting is a strength: Richard Madden as Bill, intent upon justice; Ian Hart as a conman exploiting the vulnerable; Tim Roth's Mr. Big ruthlessly set on acquiring all; Sam Shepard's preacher, work cut out amidst such lawlessness.

Much is based on fact, the 1897 gold rush to prove short-lived, satisfaction brought to few.

A ten minute bonus tells how special effects were minimal - that mountain, for example, climbed for real.

Despite reservations, worth a look - mainly for its depiction of a community struggling to survive, each day dominated by hope discovery of gold will change everything.

I wasn't too sure about getting this as the feedback wasn't all that but decided as there didn't seem to be anything else to tempt me I'd go for it. It was better than expected and both my husband and I enjoyed it, especially as the price was so reasonable. The film really brought to life how hard/horrible the life was whether it was in the gold fields or Dawson City. A smal proportion came out alright but a high proportion of others wasted their money and sometimes lost their lives into the bargain.

Enjoyed this interesting and 'real' feeling mini series. Felt some detail was washed over and some scenes seemed to jump but the story moved along and kept you gripped. Definitely cared about the characters and what might happen to them and felt that after watching it I had learned a little bit more about the famous American gold rush.

This top quality 6 part mini series from The Discovery Channel is
well worth watching. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones with Ridley
Scott as Executive Producer, this is the story of both men and women
who tried to seek their fortunes in the Yukon territory of Canada
during the 1890's.

Richard Madden plays the part of Bill Haskell a young graduate who
along with his boyhood friend Byron Epstein (Augustus Prew) walks
out of his graduation ceremony to seek his fortune in Gold.
The story is played out amidst the majestic and often cruel backdrop
of the Yukon mountains. It is man versus nature, man versus man and
for one man, the character of Bill Haskell, finding the inner strength
to keep some sense of loyalty and morality amidst the morass
of greed, murder and disease (Typhus) in lawless Dawson City. We see
him pal up with a young Jack London (Johnny Simmons) who went on to
become a great writer with such books as White Fang.
Bill loses his best friend to murder, has a bittersweet relationship
with Belinda Mulrooney (Abbie Cornish) along the way, and ultimately
survives the rigours of a gold prospectors life with "a head full
of hope".
Based on the book, Gold Diggers by Charlotte Gray, this is as pretty
much true to the life and times of the era that a film crew can
create in the rain and snow of reality, and Richard Madden played his
heart out in this role, creating a totally believable character,
brilliant.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Released 2013. Runs for approximately 270 minutes,
with a short feature on the making of the series.
DVD on 2 discs.
Recommended.
