I was initially dubious about selecting these headphones. I have several sets of higher end stuff, over ear and in-ear. For the purposes of this review I'm comparing them to the Sennheiser CX300ii - a similarly priced headphone which I'd bought the Klipsch ones to replace.

I'm all too happy to recommend the Sennheisers, there is very little wrong with them and until now I was of the opinion that for <£30they are unbeatable for sound quality, bass, range and response as well as form factor and fit. The CX300's are great, but I must say the Klipsch X1 are definitely the better earphones.

I've listened to them for around 6 hours now, and they've definitely 'broken in' significantly - they sounded pretty good at first, but they just keep getting better and better. I was initially a little underwhelmed by the lack of bass, but it starts to improve after a few minutes of using them, and within an hour it seems they're 'firing on all cylinders' when it comes to bass depth and response. Giving them a test with a range of genres - from lil' wayne and 50 cent to some dubstep, drum and bass and opera, they're sounding fabulous, and swapping between these and the Sennheisers reassures me that I've made the correct choice.

The two main purposes of the Klipsch X1 for me will be Skype, and occasional iPod / iPhone use - and they trump the Sennheisers in both disciplines. Quality of vocals is much improved as well as various genres of music. Without wishing to give the impression the Sennheiser CX300 are bad (they're quite the opposite), the Klipsch X1 is definitely the higher quality headphone.

One thing worth noting however - compared to the Sennheisers they do stick out / protrude from the ear slightly more than the Sennheisers. This makes them ever so slightly less comfortable to sleep in ( something I do frequently - nodding off listening to some music / podcasts etc ).

Also - the three sets of tips which come with the Klipsch - they work exceedingly well, however they don't cater for larger ear canals compared to the Sennheisers. I used a medium on the Sennheisers, which offered a good fit. The Klipsche are a perfect fit, but I've found I've had to use the large. Not a problem for me but worth noting. The Klipsche ones are actually oval shaped as opposed to round, which I've found makes for a far more comfortable fit - you barely notice them at all as opposed to round ones which I find less comfortable in comparison now!

Also worth noting is these are not Asymmetric - the left and right ear cables are the same length where the CX300s offer a longer right ear cable to allow you to run it around the back of your neck - great to avoid tearing them out when they get snagged etc.

To summarise - they're superb for the money. I've tried most of the popular alternatives, and these are superior. If you're looking for a super performing all-rounder in the £30-40 or less price range you will not do better than Klipsch X1s in my humble opinion. Do give them a few minutes to break in though. This is the first Klipsch product I've bought. It won't be the last!

I bought these because my other in-ear phones (Sennheiser CX 95 and Sennheiser CX 300) sound excellent but offer very little in terms of isolation and can't compete with the noise of trucks, buses and so on. In the past I've owned Shure E2c, Sony MDR-EX71, some terrible Panasonic in-ears and I also have a pair of Razer ProTones so I'm quite used to these kinds of in-ear phones. I also occasionally use full size headphones (not intended to be portable). These Klipsch earphones do offer far better isolation than all except the Shures but the similarity to the Shures stops there. People who criticise the sound quality of in-ear phones usually claim there is no bass/not enough bass but this is dependent on a good fit and doesn't say much about anything else. The Klipsch phones do have a very good bass without it being boomy or exaggerated. But they forgot the rest of the sound spectrum! The high frequencies are essentially absent and the midrange is muted and indistinct. They really sound poor. To get an idea of what they sound like you could put in some plain old ear plugs and crank up the volume on your home audio system, or wait till you have the flu or a heavy head cold, or try listening while underwater....OK some exaggeration but not as much as you might imagine. The midrange and higher frequencies being poorly represented means almost all instruments and especially voices sound indistinct and dull. After obvious defects like distortion it's one of the worst qualities to find in headphones or speakers. If you compare these with the junk that was supplied with your mp3 player you might think they are pretty decent. Compare them with anything actually decent (even similar products at similar price) you'll realise they aren't.

    Good points?

    They are cheap.

Most in-ear phones suffer from unwanted noises from the cord, caused by contact (this is often incorrectly described as microphonics). Touching the cord when listening causes noise and outside on windy day you get a whistling noise. The Klipsch cable seems well designed and has a slider for adjusting the amount of slack, and these phones minimise unwanted noise better than any others I've used.

You get a cloth case with a snap closure, maybe useful.

Bad points (apart from the sound): the owner's manual diagram shows how to use a Klipsch cleaning tool to clear the tiny apertures of wax but none is supplied.

Comfort: this is entirely subjective but these are the least comfortable phones I've owned. Fit is similar to the Shures i.e. you definitely know they are in there, but Klipsch don't supply the same variety of tips; you get tiny, medium and big silicons, distinctly less soft than Sennheiser silicones and there is nothing like the Shure foam tips. Putting them in is fine but when pulling them out the rear of the tips have a distinct edge that can give your ear canal a scraping you didn't want.

The isolation is first class so for noisy environments I'd put up with the less than ideal fit and comfort if the sound quality was even close to the Sennheisers and Shures, but it isn't. These are a very long way behind some other in-ear phones even at this very low price point.

EDIT: 7 months later and I finally lost one of the silicone tips. Klipsch don't supply any spares with the new product and the Klipsch replacements are about two thirds the price of the earphones themselves and I find them uncomfortable and annoying. I decided to try an alternative Comply T-100 Ultra Soft Foam Tips 6 Pack Size Medium These are excellent. The comfort is transformed and the sound is much improved. If the Klipsch phones came with these as standard they would rate 5 stars as a budget earphone. Having foam tips that shape themselves to your ear is very comfortable and provides the best isolation. It also demonstrates that the Klipsch marketing puff about oval tips idea is indeed only marketing puff. Your ear canals might not be round but they aren't exactly oval either. The isolation was already good, now it's as good as or better than any phones I've used and doesn't sacrifice comfort to achieve it. The phones have now cost me an extra 70% aprox but finally I'm impressed and think this represents good value. I modified my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product as advertised
Reviewed in the United States on 23 July 2011
I have had these about a week. I use them in an Ipod while walking. They fit nice and snug and I don't notice any wind or cord noise while music is playing. Admittedly, I have it at a pretty high volume level because after years of power tool usage and industrial noise I have some hearing loss at both ends of the spectrum. I listen to country rock, classic rock and roll, Stones,Dead, the Band etc and a little classical when I relax. The bass is definitely there if and when you want it but bass is not as dominant as I had thought. I first tried EQ on small speaker setting and bass reduction and then changed to classical which seems to somewhat dampen the bass and makes room for mids and highs that I am looking for in the country rock. I guess they are "broken in" by now but I can not tell any difference from when I took them out of the box. The sound isolation is great. At about $40 with no shipping or sales tax, I would say these are a good value. I would buy these again if I were to lose these.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderbarer InEar-Kopfhörer
Reviewed in Germany on 4 April 2012

    5.0 out of 5 stars えっ!ダイナミック型?

    3,980円で購入しました。初めてのKlipsch製品です。
    評価の高いBA型(シングルドライバ)のX5かX10を買おうとしたのですが、X5にしてもまだ高価なため、同シリーズのエントリーモデルから試してみようと考えての購入でした。
    商品が到着してパッケージを見ると、Dynamicと書かれています。この価格でKlipschのBA型のイヤホンが購入できると思ったのが間違いだったみたいですね。
    Dynamic型ですが、低音域から高音域までクリアかつ元気なイメージがあり、大変気持ち良く好きな曲を聴くことができましたので★5つの評価としました。また、オーバルタイプのイヤーピースのフィット感は抜群です。

    2013/5/14 追記
    X1=S2だったとは、今日まで知りませんでした。Amazon UKのレビューを読んでそれが分かりました。しかし、S4の下位機種とは理解したものの、S4と比べて低音・高音とも力強い鳴り方に満足しています。Shure掛けも不要で、装着感はハッキリ言ってS4よりも良く、X5やX10に近い感じです。

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Reviewed in the United States on 17 April 2011
The sound quality is great and I love the design of the plug end, but these are not the most comfortable. They need to go a little bit further into your ear than other buds to get the full sound. And if they are moved even slightly out of position you lose almost all sound. I ordered these to replace some damaged Creative EP-850s, and have decided to order another set of the Creatives and keep these for reserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed these pair of head phones.
Reviewed in the United States on 4 December 2011
You can get em for cheeper than what I paid for: ~$40.

I made the mistake of getting the X1 vs the S2. They are the exact same earphones. Both brilliant but one's marketed in the UK (X1) and the other mostly in america (S2). The S2 are very popular and you can get for a real good deal if you look around.

The sound of these bad boys are unbelievable. SLIGHTLY low on the bass, but that's because I love my music bass heavy(er). As an audiophile, I'd recommend these pair for a good easy grab, low end workout pair of earphones. Ones you can really get rough with. They lasted me a year or so, pretty durable though the wire seemed a bit weak on touch and nag. It never broke on me. I left em at the library one late night of studying sadly, and that was the last I saw of them.
