I love the respect Penny has for characters , Anna was intelligent and strong and Lucca was deep and meaningful. I just felt it was information overload (similarities with how I felt about her previous book Datingish), it was like a switch in me was flipped and I didn't care for the long references to Tolstoy and the other Russian literature. Now I appreciate with the books title this makes me look foolish but for me it was just too heavy on the high brow I found it a little pretentious. It sucked the fun out of the relationship, but again this must say a lot about me, it was all too serious.
I found quite a few things were left hanging, maybe it could have been longer, more aspects of his family explained and looked into more. The holding out on having sex I found a little unnecessary and a bit bizarre considering he had already been "down town" , if I were Anna I would consider it Lucca was being cold and withholding (something he had been made aware of by Anna she didn't appreciate ).
I also thought some of Anna's traits were a little like Janie's (a character from one of Penny's previous books).
I'm guessing a lot of the loose ends will be crossed in books yet to come, but for me this series just didn't have the bang of the other series Penny has written ( her Winston Brothers series is outstanding ), I guess I just want to relax and enjoy the book and not feel like it was actually me taking the literature class.
I think I've been a little harsh, I do have very high standards where Penny is concerned because her books re special
Of course there are long words and yes I did have to look some of them up, but that's not unusual for me. We're reading about a Russian Lit student and professor so it can't be written like a nursery rhyme.
I quite literally couldn't put this one down. It was in turns funny and hot. Just as I have come to expect from Penny Reid.
Added benefit is that the proceeds all go to hurricane relief so you can feel like you're doing a good thing while lazing in bed at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
This book is an extended version of the story being published via newsletter and also has alternate POV from Luca! This story is about Anna and her Russian Lit Professor Luca. This is such a sweet, intense and touching story!
As always Penny Reid manages to give us all the complete package with feels, emotional upheaval and so much of information about the subject matter without making it boring! AND THE PROCEEDS OF NOVEMBER MONTH GO TO HURRICANE RELIEF!!!!!
The story doesn't make you feel that its a lecherous, unprofessional relationship but a true meeting of academic minds and hearts. Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Reid who could ask for anything more!
Quirky characters, lots of anticipation, yearning and all round loveliness - what's not to like?...
And then the sneak peek at the end ...Argh! Can't wait for the next instalment in this series...
I loved Anna and Luca. I loved it in the newsletter parts that we didn't get Luca's POV. I sometimes prefer that but unfortunately in this offering, Penny has added some chapters from Luca's POV and I wished she hadn't as his character changed and I felt she made him into a bit of a big girls blouse! Luca is 10 years older than Anna but it seemed like she was the more mature one and she knew what she wanted. We learn from Luca's POV about his father and some parts of his upbringing but this wasn't expanded on and leaves the reader with some unanswered questions by the end.
I loved Anna's best friend Emily and the teaser at the end for her book which will be the next one in the series. As usual, Penny does write witty dialogue. She doesn't always write love scenes but she added a few in this story but I felt they didn't add anything and weren't needed plus they weren't written that well. She can definitely write a love scene as I've read them in some of her other books but they fell flat in this story.
You can still read the story for free via the newsletter and it will have a happy ending but if you want to read a bit more, then you can buy this book but it didn't really add anything for me. While reading the newsletter, I changed my star rating for the original short story to 4 stars but after reading the added chapters, I'm going to have to go back to my 3 star rating.

I don't know much about Russian literature so don't let that put you off, there are lots of references but you can get the jist or Google to catch...Read more
