Since the arrival of our new baby, my three year old daughter has started to become really upset on the days she has to go to pre school, to the point where she is crying hysterically every time I leave her at the classroom door. I can understand her anxiety and confusion as I appreciate the fact that she wants to be at home too, however I try and fail every day to explain that she must go and that she will have a nice time (as her teachers try to convince me that she does). Then I read the reviews for this book and thought, surely one book can't do all that - but really it does. From the moment the book arrived my daughter opened the packaging and wanted me to read it straight away, which wasn't my intention, I thought I would leave it for a quiet moment when the baby was asleep etc. But no, in the midst of our daily chaos we sat down and read the book. I kissed her hand as the racoons did and then when the story was finished my daughter got up without saying much and went to play. At this point I was unsure whether or not she had taken the message on board and I thought that the nocturnal habits of the racoons may have been confusing. Then to my amazement a few minutes later my daughter went to get some paper and her crayons and told me that she was making a card. I said "that's nice, who is it for?" She replied "it's for you mummy to say thank you for my kissing hand" (I have never had a thank you card from my daughter for anything, even the most expensive toys are somewhat taken for granted) which confirmed to me that not only did she like the story but that she completely understood the message and enjoyed sharing something so simple and yet so special. The kissing hand is now part of our daily routine, which has become much easier.Read more ›

This book is so much more than just a book about separation anxiety or being nervous about starting school. It describes a tender, private moment of affection and love between a mother and child in a way that is so real. As parents, we know that there are special, private ways to convey your love... ways that are significant to you. I read this story to my three year old when I was pregnant with our second child. Knowing that I would have to be away from him for the first time while I had a c-section, I could barely get through the book at times. After the first time, he started giving ME "kissing hands" and they have become a part of our lives now! SO special!
I've seen other parents and children giving each other "kssing hands" at the same time my son and I do. How sweet and how comforting...what a way to share how your love stays with them always!!

My 4 year old really liked the kissing hand idea, and took quite a bit of comfort from it. I also think it is very sweet that the little raccoon gives his mum's hand some kisses too. The fact that the animals were nocturnal was a bit confusing for my little lad though, I had to explain that he wouldn't be going to school at night-time too!

Chester Raccoon does not want to go to school. His mother helps Chester by showing him with the kissing hand that no matter where he is his mother and love is always with him.

I read this story to my 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son. They both loved the story and like me to kiss their hands to go alone with the story.

I felt this story helps its younger readers understand that while school sometimes seems like a scary place your loved ones are always with you. It was a beautiful way of helping children understand real things that are going on in there lives. The story is told in such a way that it's fun and informative the pictures are clear and kids loved to look at them and most of all it helps with children's problems.

A beautiful kids book that helps young readers understand their fears in life.

My grandson struggled to leave his mum when he started school, this book really helped him to cope with saying goodbye at the classroom door. Even now we still refer to it when saying godbye but more in fun now as he is 7yrs old.

A beautiful, simple story to help children that struggle with seperation anxiety. Not a certain guarantee to work on all children as the first thing my daughter said after reading it was "I still don't want to go to school" but I'm sure it would help many children and their worried parents.

My daughter had separation anxiety at nursery. We used this book and she now does this each time I drop her off. Story of a raccoon who's scared to leave his mummy. Mummy kisses his palm and he keeps the kiss with him all day long. Really simple technique but does work.

I saw this book and thought A would really enjoy it and of course she did. I love the idea that the Chester's mom comes up with. I believe I will be doing the Kissing Hand with A when she starts school this year.
I think that this is a great read to read to those that are going to school or will be going to school. Everyone gets nervous on their first day of school and so a little reassurance with love helps make the day better.
The pictures are wonderful and A thought it was neat that Chester went to school at night, which or course lead to the explaining of raccoons.
