Despite being a precision instrument, a vector network analyzer (VNA) gets most of its accuracy from the calibration kit. A good calibration kit, often called a "cal kit", is essential for accurate use of a VNA. This is true for both phase and amplitude measurements. The Kirkby Microwave 85033 is a low-cost SMA calibration and verification kit, which is compatible with all VNAs from HP, Agilent, Rohde & Schwarz, Copper Mountain and SDR-kits. Although it will not be as accurate as similar products from Keysight, Anritsu, Rohde & Schwarz, Rosenberger or Maury Microwave, the kit offers sufficient accuracy for all amateur and all but the most demanding of professional applications. The kit is supplied with a 3.5" floppy disk which can be used to load the coefficients directly into the popular HP 8753 series VNAs that have floppy disk drives (8753D, 8753E, 8753ES and 8753D). The web site at http://www.kirkbymicrowave.co.uk/support/85033/ has all the information needed to use the kit with other VNAs, including files that can be downloaded for most HP/Agilent/Keysight VNAs, all Copper Mountain VNAs, and the Rohde & Schwarz ZNB series. For other VNAs it will be necessary to enter the coefficients manually. The kit includes a USB stick which has measured data on the supplied attenuator. The user should measure the attenuator, and confirm the results conform closely to those measured values. If there are major differences, it indicates either the VNA is faulty, or more likely the coefficients have not been loaded properly.
