Best known for his Jungle Books and Just So Stories, Rudyard Kipling was a complex and compelling writer. Born in Bombay, sent to England at the age of five and left for years in the hands of a callous house-keeper and then the English public school system, Kipling became a cub reporter in colonial India. He went on to become one of the most acute observers of the lives of others and, in spite of giving voice to the prejudices of his class and of the British Empire, he was, in effect, one of its harshest critics.
