From the manufacturer
Kingston’s UV500 family of solid-state drives dramatically improves the responsiveness of your existing system with incredible boot, loading and transfer times compared to mechanical hard drives. Powered by a Marvell 88SS1074 controller combined with 3D NAND Flash for read and write speeds up to 520MB/s and 500MB/s¹, this SSD is 10X faster than a traditional hard drive for better performance, ultra-responsive multi-tasking and an overall faster system. UV500 provides end-to-end data protection, supports 256-bit AES hardware-based encryption and TCG Opal 2.0 security management solutions.
More reliable and durable than a hard drive, UV500 is built with NAND Flash semiconductor memory. There are no moving parts, making it far less likely to fail than a mechanical hard drive. It is also cooler and quieter, and its shock and vibration resistance makes it ideal for notebooks and other mobile computing devices.
UV500 is available in Multiple capacities from 120GB–1.92TB,² so you can buy one to use as a boot drive, or take advantage of the larger capacities to store videos, photos and host your most frequently used applications.
Highlights:
- 10X faster than a 7200RPM hard drive¹
- AES 256-bit Hardware Encryption Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) and TCG Opal 2.0
- Available in multiple form factors (2.5”/M.2/mSATA)
- Multiple capacities up to 1.92TB²

Ideal for desktops and notebooksComes in multiple form factors (2.5”/M.2/mSATA) to fit in a wider array of systems. It is ideal for slimmer notebooks and systems with limited space. |
Multiple capacitiesAvailable in a range of capacities up to 1.92TB² to meet your data storage requirements. |
Encrypted protectionProtect sensitive data with support for 256-bit AES hardware-based encryption and TCG Opal 2.0. |
10X faster than a hard drive¹With incredible read/write speeds, the UV500 will not only increase performance, but can also breathe new life into older systems. |
This SSD is designed for use in desktop and notebook computer workloads and is not intended for server environments.
1.Based on “out-of-box performance” using a SATA Rev 3.0 / PCIe 3.0 motherboard. Speed may vary due to host hardware, software and usage. IOMETER random 4K read/write is based on an 8GB partition.
2.Some of the listed capacity on a Flash storage device is used for formatting and other functions and is thus not available for data storage. As such, the actual available capacity for data storage is less than what is listed on the products. For more information, go to Kingston's Website and search under the Flash Guide Section.

mSATA is what you need for a laptop and there is typically only one disc in a laptop. You therefore need to clone the existing disc to the new disc and then install it. Software is needed for this, so check that it comes with the deal you are looking at. I bought for about £65 (IT Trade Station), which is a good deal if you don't need the software (they were very rapid in delivery, and quick to respond when I pointed out that I had difficulties; they gave me a £25 refund - quite beyond their call of duty. I had just wanted a pointer to the need for software in their listing. 5* to them overall). If you do want the software, the SSD will be more expensive, I guess to cover the cost of Kingston bundling their cloning/disc management software with their SSD that you are buying.
There are a few important things to note when cloning - the old and the new discs should be formatted the same, ie both MBR or both GPT. Likewise take care to expand the existing main storage that you are copying over to fill the unallocated space (the software will allow that) - otherwise you get a new SSD with the same size as the old one. The whole idea is to get a larger SSD!
The other thing you will need is a cable to attach the disc to a USB3 outlet on your laptop so the cloning can be done. I instead bought an enclosure (about £10) which one can connect with a USB3 cable. I have, after doing the swap, put the old SSD into the enclosure which makes it a fast, external SSD for the now much expanded laptop.
The drive is easy to install, it's quick and offers a lot of storage for a very small footprint and for the price paid represents excellent value for money.
The performance when in this case, reinstalling the Windows 10 Operating system, was great and activation was automatic as the computer configuration had a Digital Microsoft Licence. It does allow for a configuration change like the Hard Drive but from previous experience, more problematic if the Motherboard is changed.
Just wow! The massive boost in performace just dropping this into a old IDE laptop with a converter is amazing and this is coming from someone used to m.2 and PCIe-based SSD's. The difference just this SSD makes to ageing hardware is amazin, why throw away a perfectly good laptop that still works!
One of the reason I chose a Kingston drive is that, although not the fastest drives, they are known for good reliability.
I'm now out of pocket £30 as it seems I'm just beyond the refund period.
