"Kingston’s DataTraveler Micro is one of the world’s smallest USB Flash drives. Simply connect it to any device with a USB port to store, transfer and share photos, videos, music and other favourite files. DataTraveler Micro easily adds up to 32GB of extra storage to your tablet PC, slim notebook, car stereo and more without increasing the size of its footprint. I am using this to store all my audio so as to have access to them all on the mini-hifi player; this USB stick works flawlessly in this respect, navigation to track is quick and audio tracks play without problems. Its tiny size helps here, because it hardly protrudes from the hifi making it safe to leave plugged in without risk of snagging it while moving near it.
They have all had full 16GB capacity (minus a few kb) and it's amazing how many mp3 tracks you can fit onto these!
The limiting factor seems to be the car's mp3 player, which can only handle 999 tracks. Our 16GB memory sticks are still only half full when they contain 999 tracks.
The form factor is excellent, with a very low profile, but not too tiny to either lose them or to be unable to remove them from USB ports.
Minimal risk of them getting knocked in the car and breaking off, yet big enough to extract them without fuss each time.
When transferring files (under USB2) they memory sticks don't get hot. Transfer rate is reasonable and although not USB3 speed, this is compensated for by their very low cost.
These were sold directly by Amazon and appear to be the real thing - no fake imitation stuff.
It's a pity their price has recently increased by almost 25%, as they gave incredible value for money. Just over a fiver is still not bad and a good investment, as they seem to last well.
A well designed and effective product at a very competitive price.
However I have a HP Split and this comes with a one time backup option but in many cases an HP being one of these you cannot use a flash drive larger than 32GB as the backup software does not recognise anything bigger. I initially purchased a 64GB with hop I could create a flash drive and then also add file history to it.
For those who have had problems this little device works great with windows 8.1 but I MUST WARN I did use the HP backup software and not the windows 8.1 built in backup.
The device is simply plug and go and has no problems with communicating with the O/S, a typical ne install of windows 8.1 with MS SQL Express and visual studio ( web and desktop) installed the total image size was 14GB.
I will be buying another one now as the device is so small it can easily be plugged into my HP split in tablet mode and not be an issue from a size perspective giving me extra on the go storage for project files and such like.
However, with the development of larger capacity USB flash drives, when I bought my new computer, these drives had become sufficiently compact to be able to leave them in situ in laptops with little risk of accidental damage. Thus U have a mouse drive and one of these 64GB permanently plugged into my laptop, along with a 128GB HDSD card as a local backup and archive. Both have proved to be fast and reliable for 18 months now. Certainly have no regrets, so far.
(1) I tried this in the USB port of a hotel TV. The TV did recognise the USB stick and saw the folders on it, but did not "see" any playable files. That may be a media player compatibility question (I have no experience with plugging USBs into TVs, just wanted to try and see what happened).
(2) The TV USB slot was somewhat recessed and that made it somewhat strenuous to remove the device (thick fingers, little space around USB to grab, and an already tight USB fitting). So if you plan to frequently remove this from a slot with little "grab space" around it, test whether this is right for that use.
pros: tiny form factor makes it not an eyesore in places it's going to stay for an extended period and makes it less likely that it will be punched and accidentally broken in an environment such as in a club - these drives are perfect for use with dj decks that support usb drives. decent read/write speed. good amount of data storage, especially for size.
cons: easy to lose, casing seems to 'come off' or move about slightly when pulling out the drive from an especially tight usb port (for example the usb ports on numark ndx900 decks) -- i can't tell yet whether this is doing any damage or whether it's just the casing but either way it shows possible bad build quality (this is the same on both units i have)
4/5 for possible shoddy build quality
