Popular US sitcom about a beleaguered courier driver and his family. Doug and Carrie Heffernan are a young Queens couple who should be sitting pretty. Doug (Kevin James) is a courier driver with a cheeky, playful nature who, given a choice, almost always chooses what's most likely to rile his wife's fiery temper. Carrie (Leah Remini) is a legal assistant, vivacious, wise, and, on the face of it, waaay too good for Doug - a fact that informs much of the comedy here. In the first flush of their married life together, however, Carries' parents' house burns down. Her mum dies, and dad Arthur needs a place to stay. Arthur (Jerry Stiller) is an oddball, hilariously volatile old man who never says anything that isn't in anger or indignation. An ensemble of Doug's quirky friends, who constantly dispense advice he takes to heart but which is utterly, disastrously wrong, round out the cast in this long-running family comedy. Episodes included: 'Pilot', 'Fat City', 'Cello, Goodbye', 'Richie's Song', 'Paternal Affairs', 'Head First', 'The Rock', 'Educating Doug', 'Road Rayge', 'Supermarket Story', 'Noel Cowards', 'Fixer Upper', 'Best Man', 'Dog Days', 'Crappy Birthday', 'S'Ain't Valentine's', 'Court Date', 'White Collar', 'Rayny Day', 'Train Wreck', 'Hungry Man', 'Time Share', 'Where's Poppa?', 'Art House'and 'Maybe Baby'.
In the sitcom The King of Queens, comedian Kevin James has created a new archetype: the sensitive lug. This deceptively simple comedy bounces along because delivery man Doug Heffernen (James), though completely a guy's guy, constantly struggles to keep the world around him in a delicate emotional balance. Meanwhile, his wife Carrie (Leah Remini), though utterly feminine (and one of the sexiest women on television), uses the kind of no-nonsense rational approach that's usually a man's province. Add to this mix Carrie's father Arthur (Jerry Stiller), whose life as a fussy, self-absorbed retiree makes him more like their child than an adult, and you've got the building blocks for an excellent and durable show.
The first season of The King of Queens quickly found its voice with stories firmly rooted in the everyday world, rarely spinning off into absurdity--and why should it, when there's such a wealth of humor to be found in petty neuroses (when Doug gets assigned an attractive young woman as a trainee at work, he gets hurt when Carrie isn't remotely jealous), ill-advised scheming (to weasel out of a traffic ticket, Carrie agrees to go out on a date with the cop who pulled her over), and juggling obligations to friends and family (just about every episode). Brilliant comic bits abound; one classic moment features Doug and Carrie having a furious argument in absolute silence at a cello concert--a scene that fuses deft physicality, well-developed characters, and sheer silliness. The King of Queens is a delight. --Bret Fetzer

Kevin James plays the role of the role of the portly, but adorable, Doug Heffernan, an International Parcel Service delivery guy and husband to the earthy and sexy Carrie (Leah Remini), who clearly rules the roost. They live in a modest house in Queens, one of the outer boroughs of New York City. Carrie's father, the idiosyncratic Arthur Spooner (Jerry Stiller), for reasons made clear in the pilot episode, also joins their household. His living with them adds to the many comedic moments of this popular television series. There is a funny group of friends, odd neighbors, and other assorted characters that drift in and out of the Heffernans' daily lives, adding to the comedic zest of this comedy series about middle class life in one of the outer boroughs of New York City.
The casting is perfect. The series is very funny with well written scripts and excellent performances by its very talented cast. What more can a viewer ask for? This is an excellent, value laden, three disc DVD set, replete with a pilot episode commentary by Kevin James and the show's creator, Executive Producer Michael Weithorn. This DVD set also has a feature in which the cast of the series takes the viewer behind the scenes, as they look back on and reminisce about the show's first season. All in all, this is a value priced DVD set with crisp, clear visuals and audio. It is absolutely one of my favorite comedies, and I am happy to have the entire first season. I look forward to getting the succeeding seasons, as they become available.
Leah Remini is a hugely talented comedic actor who has starred in bit parts in major sitcoms and even had a role in another good NBC sitcom, 'Fired up', sadly that was shortlived. Kevin James, who plays Doug in this show I was less familiar with but combined they make the perfect couple made for TV with interesting and often hilarious banter bouncing off of each other.
Last but not least the star of the show and comic legend Jerry Stiller, from Seinfeld fame dusts off his classic eccentric father routine once more, this time not for George Costanza but for Carrie Herffernan (Leah). Needless to say the scenes he is in are absolutely terrific.
Now that the series has wrapped for the last time, looking back at the last 6 seasons after this, the earlier episodes are not quite as funny as later ones but this should not deter you from grabbing a copy of it. Classic episodes in this season are 'Supermarket Story' and 'Wheres Poppa', plus many more.
This show, like many others is unfortunately a well kept secret and has not been given a terrestrial primetime airing so unless you have Paramount Comedy Channel, or been up early enough in the mornings when channel 4 have aired it, you've probably never heard of it.
The only difference between this release and the US one is like always the price.Read more ›
Only way I can think of to rectify this problem is to start buying DVD players until I find one that can actually play this disk, so if you have a player that is over 1 year old you can forget about buying this relese.
His life revolves around food (as much of it), working (as little of it), hanging around with his mates in front of a TV, and generally goofing off his wife with his antics.... sounds like me! What's there that is not to like?
The quality of the packaging is excellent. Really top-notch, and of course, brilliant recording. The first series is not in widescreen, but that is only natural, because series1 was made when widescreen tvs were not around.
Excellent qualiy, excellent pricing and brilliant service!
