"Wonderful" (Sunday Telegraph)
"Browne creates an understanding for the creature's emotions. Without spectacular cinematic effects, the themes of the story are much more apparent" (TES)
"A stunningly illustrated picture book that is just right for secondary school ages . . . With wit and verve in the artwork this is a winner" (The School Librarian)

The story is, obviously, well known. King Kong is captured on a remote island and taken to New York, where he escapes and climbs the Empire State Building. Miss Ann Darrow, the beautiful young lady that Kong captures, bears more than a passing resemblance to Marilyn Monroe, and the book perfectly captures the time period. Glorious illustrations, an exciting storyline and fun to read. I bought this for my nine year old son, who is a big fan of the film of King Kong, and he was riveted. This makes a lovely gift and a good addition to any child’s bookshelf, which will appeal to a wide age range.
What makes this so special? Anyone who knows Anthony Browne will expect the fabulous quality of the illustrations. While the book follows the film closely, the images are unmistably Browne - perhaps not that unexpected that the creator of Gorilla and Willy should tackle the greatest ape of all.
And the text does not compromise the story or patronise younger readers. This is no simple picture book, but a well told, exciting adventure story, as gripping as the original.
All in a all an excellent offering, highly recommended.
