This book is not perfect. It has many of the niggling flaws common to self published work - a missing comma here, a misspelled word there. That being said, this book is also wonderful. A debut work, the passion this author has for his subject matter is palpable, his characters engaging.

I can highly and thoroughly recommend this book to all fantasy readers, and it is my firm belief that this new author is one to watch, and to watch closely!

It is one thing to write a book in the style of a successful author, but it is quite another to plagiarise plot and characters, and then to threaten at least two more sequels which will no doubt continue in the same vein. This is a shameless copy of a well-respected author without any Gemmell's humour, pace, balance (or length). There is the Druss character (heroic axeman), the old bowman and his equally old smelly giant of a friend, the bard who has no battle skills but who finds his character in adversity, two swords (one gold one silver) with magical powers, an evil king, an evil witch woman, a scheming advisor, an unwilling rebel leader - every single person in this book has been lifted directly from Gemmell's novels and sometimes not even the names have been changed dramatically.

Even were the above not too patently true, the quality of the grammar and editing are so bad as to make the mere act of reading it a continual irritation. Connell clearly has no idea what an apostrophe is or where to use it. His plot lines exude laziness. Buster is ten years old on one page and then twelve on the next. A fortress is full of provisions but short on weapons on one page and then the reverse is true three pages on - soon after that there appears to be neither food nor weapons. Had I not been stuck on a train, this one would have been for the archive bin in short measure. Don't buy this - buy the infinitely superior originals.

I rarely write reviews as everyone has their own taste but I am afraid this is the exception. There are large chunks of this book that have been ripped from David Gemmell's own books, and I dont just mean general concepts but characters as well, even actual phrases and lines from his books. Mr Connell should attempt to develop his own ideas rather than borrow them from another author. I would recommend that any prospective buyer reads David Gemmell's books instead as it is hard to tell a difference.

Another mistake on my part as I actually paid for this one, true it was only 77p but I'm afraid even that is too much!

It promised so much & gave too little. The narrative voice is very weak & wooden, & I found it jarring almost immediately but I foolishly expected it to improve; it never did. Though the story held some promise, again it failed to deliver. The characters are one dimensional & frankly unrealistic.

Yet it was the usual Kindle problem of none existent editing that made it unreadable in the end.

Don't Bother.

If you like fantasy fiction then this is definitely worth a read. There are a few mini words but the story is gripping with similarities to their such like books , but overall very enjoyable
