I felt this was more of a eulogy than a whole account of the man. I understand that it was commissioned and that the author would not hae bee free to write of the less salubrious aspects of the man but as King he came out very well.

Despite being an authorised biography, this is not sycophantic or glossy. It is factual, well written and embraces an economic style, free of hyperbole, which is rare in more recent books. Written in 1940, it is all the more fascinating for reflecting the mores of the first half of the twentieth century. The fact that it gives almost equal weight to each year of the king's reign rather than focusing on 'issues' or the author's biases, lends a steady realism to the narrative. Not all of it is gripping, but it is all interesting. In look, feel and availability, this book illustrates why you should never buy a Kindle e-reader.
