Review

A stirring, fascinating and fresh account of a part of our history that should be declared Not Forgotten (Ian Hislop)

A beautifully written book that gently yet powerfully reminds of the debt freedom owes to the Indian soldier and nation. It is compellingly different and it's timing perfect. It serves humbly to remind we British of the debt we owe the people of the sub-continent and of the ties that irrevocably bind us together (Lord Richards, Former Chief of Defence Staff)

Shrabani Basu has captured the epic drama and the human tragedy of World War I with an artist's eye and a historian's mind. Her narrative vivifies a chapter of modern history that had dullened into sepia (Gopal Gandhi)

In this moving chronicle of dauntless courage and human fortitude, Shrabani Basu restores to history and to greatness valorous men orphaned by the king they served and forgotten by the country they loved (Shashi Tharoor)

Basu's book tells us of children as young as 10 who fought in the frontline; of special arrangements made by the British to accommodate caste and religion, including separate funeral provisions; of the enduring blight of untouchability, even on foreign shores; and of outstanding examples of bravery, earning 11 Indians the Victoria Cross (The Hindu)

In her new book For King and Country, the historian Shrabani Basu movingly explores the ordeals, and the achievements, of the million-plus Indian troops who fought for the Empire in the First World War (Independent)

Understandably, the flood of books on the Great War concentrates on the events in Europe. Those in English focus almost exclusively on British soldiers. It's Tommy this and Tommy that. Both approaches have serious flaws. The first ignores the fighting in Russia, Italy, Serbia, the Ottomam Empire and the Middle East. In so doing it gives a warped impression of the very important contribution these theatres made to victory in 1918. The second short-changes the very valuable fighting and work done by volunteers from India, China, Burma and other countries. This book , along with a very few other accounts, aims to put the Indian contribution in true perspective. She succeeds admirably.

The Indian Expeditionary Force (IEAF) had been sent to bolster the BEF. Its cavalry fought on the western front up to February 1918, the rest of the Corps left France in late 1915. Seldom mentioned is the fact that India provided 7 expeditionary forces for the war effort. They went to East Africa, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Gallipoli. In the main they fought as part of the BEF not as a distinctive entity. Some 83,000 indian troops fought under 1,500 British officers. In addition, there were 26,000 Indian non-combatants.This book details many personal accounts of the Indian soldiers who came from every corner of undivided India. One mountain village had no men for the four years for every single male voluntered to fight in France.

As any historian knows there are lies, damned lies and regimental histories. The Indian Corps came in for criticism by some soldiers. It was said they were unreliable, of low morale and lacked courage. The original evidence shows that these criticisms were total fiction. Racism was one reason. One account was based on a writer's unit that was never near an Indian regiment .

Great book - good companion to 'Sepoys in the trenches' as its written by an Indian lady so it gives a slightly different viewpoint. Sepoys being written by an ex Gurkha officer (very good by the way). Both are very important books on a forgotten part of our shared history with Indian and Pakistan.

A fantastic and timely synthesis of the Indian contribution to the First World War. Shrabani Basu excellently intertwines the wider historical narrative with the very personal stories of individual Indian Soldiers. By doing so, she paints an extremely detailed but incredibly fascinating picture of India's contribution to the 'Great War'.
