NEW – With twice as many pixels as the previous generation, Kindle Paperwhite has an improved high-resolution 300 ppi display for crisp, print-quality text.

Next-generation reading experience

NEW – Kindle Paperwhite now offers Bookerly, an exclusive font crafted from the ground up for reading on digital screens. Warm and contemporary, Bookerly is inspired by the artistry of the best fonts in modern print books, but is hand-crafted for great readability at any font size.

NEW – All-new typesetting engine lays out words just as the author intended for beautiful rendering of pages. With improved character spacing and the addition of hyphenation, justification, kerning, ligatures, and drop cap support, our best-in-class typography helps you read faster with less eyestrain.

Enjoy reading with larger font sizes without compromising your reading experience. Page layout and margins automatically adapt to work well at even the largest font sizes. The new typography and layout improvements are available on over half a million books, including many best sellers, with thousands more being added every week.

No glare in bright sunlight

Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, the latest Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper – no annoying glare, even in bright sunlight.

Won't tire your eyes in the dark

Kindle Paperwhite guides light towards the surface of the display with its built-in front light – so you can read comfortably without straining your eyes. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

Charge monthly, not daily

Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to a socket. A single charge can last up to six weeks (based on half an hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at ten).

Read comfortably with one hand

Thinner than a pencil, lighter than a paperback. Hold Kindle Paperwhite comfortably in one hand for long reading sessions.

No distractions

Kindle Paperwhite is purposely designed as a dedicated E-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions such as e-mail alerts or push notifications.

Wi-Fi

A Kindle with Wi-Fi is a great choice if you already have a high-speed Internet connection and wireless router set up in your home. If you do not have Wi-Fi set up at home, a 3G model may be a better option—3G connectivity lets you download books anytime, anywhere.

The added convenience of 3G lets you download books anytime, anywhere, without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. Your Kindle may use wireless connectivity to make other services available, such as wireless delivery of personal documents, which may require an additional charge. For more information, see Wireless Terms and Conditions

With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, 3G lets you download books anytime, anywhere, whether you're relaxing on a beach, halfway through a hike or waiting on the tarmac. Check 3G coverage area

I received my Kindle as a birthday present in October (I previously had the original keyboard one but stopped using it about 3 yrs ago) I done my reading of reviews and looking at specs before deciding on this one, so I thought I'd give a review to counteract all of the bad ones I've seen. I use my kindle on my bus journey to and from work everyday, so thats about an hour and a half of reading each day, it also gets read if I take the train anywhere plus I occasionally read at home.
I fully charged my kindle when I first got it, (2nd October) and around the beginning of December I gave it an hour or so, so not a full charge because that takes several hours. Only last week did I have to give it its first full charge because I noticed it was running low. I keep my brightness on either 8 or 10 depending on the lighting. The battery life is phenomenal! I couldn't fault it, only thing that could be considered a downside is that it takes a while to fully charge, but that's not a real issue.
The adverts... a lot of reviews make out that it's annoying and in your face. When you turn off the screen, yes you do get a single advert (it's not changing from one thing to another) BUT they are advertisements for other books 95% of the time which I find quite useful because you know... I'm reading a book, and I'll probably read another when I'm done, and they're related to the same genre of books I've previously read. The other 5% of adverts are for kindle accessories... chargers, cases. Again, related &potentially useful. You only see these ads in the short space of time in between switching your screen off and putting it in your bag. It isn't going to kill you and isn't a real bother.

It's fab, but I'm giving it four stars because I don't think they make it clear enough that it comes stuffed with intrusive and annoying ads unless you pay an additional £10. It's lovely once the adds are turned off though. If you don't want adds you need to chose the option 'without special offers', which makes the price just under £120.

I have made an in-depth video review of this new Paperwhite. It shows not just the differences between the old & new Paperwhite but also many of the features of Kindles in general - features which will show you why reading a book on a Kindle can be better than reading a physical book (but if you prefer a real book in your hands, I respect that).

If you are in a hurry and you are loooking for one thing in particular, you may wish to use the time index below to jump straight to it.

The video covers, in this order:

1. (Starting at a time display of 0:34 into the video): The frontlight, and dimming/increasing its strength.

2. (At 0:59): How to toggle between displaying "Location", "Page number", "Time left in chapter" and "Time left in book".

3. (At 1:27): Comparison between the old Paperwhite's screen resolution (212ppi) & this new one's (300ppi) (N.B. Amazon has reduced the quality of my video. The difference in screen resolution is dead obvious in reality but mild in this video).

4. (At 1:48): The new 'Bookerley' font.

5. (At 2:14): Speed of page turning using the touchscreen.

6. (At 2:26): Using the `Vocabulary Builder'.

7. (At 3:17): Highlighting text - how to do it & the speed of it (much faster & easier than on the Kindle Keyboard).

8. (At 3:27): Annotating text - how to do it & the speed of it (much faster & easier than on the Kindle Keyboard).

9. (At 3:38): Responsiveness of the touchscreen when typing or turning a page.

10. (At 4:06): Moving to a different chapter/page.

11. (At 4:34): How to use the X-Ray feature (well worth looking at - it's a great feature).

12.

At least on my unit, the backlighting at the bottom (there appear to be four LEDs there) creates an uneven, shadowy lighting that is quite noticeable and annoying. I don't know if this is the case for all units or just mine. It's a bit of a disappointment. This is my third Kindle, and I had always been quite pleased with them, but this one (the latest generation) has this problem that I find simply quite distracting.
Also, the bit of advertisement at the bottom - when in 'Home' view, is quite annoying. I wish Amazon had had the elegance to stay away from the vulgarity of infringement on personal spaces (more so than other devices, a Kindle can be more personal). One's reading instruments are one's heaven away from the world; they should never be littered with intrusions from the vulgar world of advertisement and marketing.

Thank you.

Got my paperwhite after using a v4 kindle for many years. The paperwhite attracted me for the ability to read it in bed without using a bedside light. The screen is clear and easy to read, you can change the backlight brightness so it is not blasting in your face. Navigation is via swiping the screen which sometimes is annoying as the menu system is poor and you sometimes change page when you really wanted to get to the menu. So that brings me onto the menu design - whoever designed the menu must be blind as it is the worst menu design I have even encountered. It is just not intuitive and compared to the V4 Kindle is like using a caveman tool. Syncing up my old books did not work properly, the Kindle web page kept saying I didn't have a paperwhite. After searching for hours on how to do stuff I finally managed to half sync my docs - yes they are not called booked, they are docs (99% of the info refers to the paperwhite before the latest software update so is useless). If you have used a Kindle you may have used collections, this means you can put your books in a collection - I do this by author and have a collection called "Read" where I move books to when read. The method of viewing your book/doc collection is very poor, you can show all or show collections but I have been unable to show books that are not in collections. Amazon, I doubt anyone with any real power will take note of this review but you seriously need to change the interface and make a web based app where a user can organise their ebook collection.
