Ann Cleeves's writing is simple but entrancing, taking you slowly into her world and the thinking of her detective - Inspector Ramsey. He always doubts his abilities but he always gets there - this time complicated by a little love interest from the past..... Will the flame re-ignite - I must read the next in this series to find out I guess...

The Inspector Ramsay books are good. If you are used to Vera series or Shetland it does take a little getting used to. Stephen Ramsay is a loner - he is divorced from his wealthy wife Diane and lives alone in his cottage. He is not well liked by his colleagues and does find it difficult to socialise. In this book he investigates a case where a young girl has been murdered and found in the boot of a car - unfortunately hers in not the only murder that takes place in this village. Ramsay's boss only has a year before he retires and wants the case solving quickly - which is not Ramsay's style. His ex girlfriend and her daughter are also included in his list of murder suspects, which worries Ramsay as he still holds a torch for her. Other events are impacting on him solving the case - the young murdered girl's aunt and grandma live on a rough estate and there seems to be some mystery surrounding the family. The young girl that was murdered was playing a lead role in a production at the centre - and again the murders seem to be loosely connected to the centre. Ramsay plods through the evidence - often stumbling around in the dark before that lightbulb moment and eventually he finds that everything clicks into place.

This book is much cheaper on kindle or as an e-book to download onto a computer or IPad.

At first I wasn't keen on Inspector Ramsay but by Killjoy the fourth book in the series I warmed to the character.
As always with Ann Cleeves well written, authentic settings, lots of false trails & a twist or two before the conclusion.
An excellent read

I found this series by accident and read them all, one after the other. Killjoy (as are the rest) is an intelligent story, easy to read and you care about the characters and adore Ramsey!
A great read, I recommend it!
These books have inspired me to visit Northumberland next summer!

I've become so used to a consistently high standard from Ann Cleeves that this was a disappointment. There are typos and other kinds of errors; there's too much convoluted explication and the plot is not convincing Giving it three stars is a stretch--I almost went down to two.

Started off quite well, then dragged on to an unconvincing conclusion. It felt as though the author had worked her way through various possibilities and couldn't quite made up her mind how to finish the book. The tearaways and the two old ladies storyline was totally far fetched.

Perhaps just about the best Stephen Ramsey book
I have read of the series although
I still find them a little 'tame'after the Vera books and the Shetland series. Ann Cleeves obviously got better and better after these early books and I look forward to the next Vera book which I understand will be out shortly.

I like this author and am quickly working my way through her books.
It took me two books to warm to the Ramsey character but I like him now.
These books have a very 'real' feel to them. You can relate to the characters and the settings.
I think I will wait till tomorrow to start the next one.
