Review

"I enthusiastically recommend The Killing Game by Toni Anderson. If you enjoy tense romantic suspense, military heroes who are old enough to retire from the military (Ty Dempsey enlisted at seventeen and has served twenty-two years = a thirty-nine year-old hero) and heroines who are passionate about their work, then skip the rest of this review and start the book now." ~Smart Bitches Trashy Books. "The Killing Game is an exhilarating, masterfully-crafted mix of life-and-death adventure and political intrigue. It's also a riveting romance, and with the author's trademark gritty and evocative prose, wily imagination and fierce respect for the plight of the snow leopard and the war-torn country it inhabits, this book is one unforgettable read." Kathy Altman 5-Star Goodreads Review. "I'd recommend this to any romantic suspense reader looking for a unique, intricately woven story that will really touch you." Peaces of Me 5-Star review "Realistic scene descriptions, endangered species, and plenty of spies made this a sure fire hit in my reading collection." SnSreviews 5-Star review.

About the Author

New York Times and USA Today international bestselling author, Toni Anderson, writes dark, gritty Romantic Suspense novels that have hit the Amazon and Nook Top 10, and iBooks Top 50. Her novels have won many awards. A former Marine Biologist from Britain, she inexplicably ended up in the geographical center of North America, about as far from the ocean as it is possible to get. She now lives in the Canadian prairies with her Irish husband and two children and spends most of her time complaining about the weather. Toni has no explanation for her oft-times dark imagination, and only hopes the romance makes up for it. She's addicted to reading, dogs, tea, and chocolate. Having read Toni Anderson's previous books I was surprised she had to self publish this one, her best to date. The relationship between hero, Ty Dempsey and heroine, Axelle Dhen, developed on an emotional level first before being drawn into the physicality of love. Given the nature and locality of their meeting Toni, delicately but speedily, moved their relationship at an appropriate pace. This story is a complex one, drawing elements from two long running conflicts, the war in Afghanistan and the Irish "Troubles". What particularly spoke to me in this book were the insights into the previous experiences of both our hero, Ty, and our anti-hero, Dmitri Volkov, which elicited sympathy within me for both men and the life altering decisions they had to make. I grew up in the Irish Republic when the Troubles were at their height and vividly remember the horrors of our history. There are twists in this story but I won't spoil it for you. Read it!

I've read the first five of the 'Cold Justice' series but this is my first standalone read by this author. After reading those first five books I had high expectations (the Cold Justice series is superb - check it out if you haven't already!) and fortunately 'The Killing Game' didn't disappoint...

The writing is fluid, easy to read and consistent and the scenes are described in a way that makes you feel like you're there. I've never been to Afghanistan but it felt true to how I'd imagine it to be.

The action is explosive and unique - not just the same old 'military man rescues a damsel-in-distress and they fall in insta-love then have lots of sex' but rather a deep storyline that's clever and unpredictable, constantly twisting with character connections that you just don't expect. And it's all done in a way that's so insidious that it's just completely believable. My only complaint would be that sometimes there are so many twists and turns (and flashbacks in this book!) that it can all get overwhelming trying to figure it all out... I actually had to sketch on a post-it-note how all of the characters fitted together.

The romance was a bit on the light side... or maybe that's not fair... the romance was there but it was more romantic tension & unrequited love rather than sex. And that tension didn't really break until the end of the book and even then it still wasn't really expressed, more kind of implied. I don't actually mind that in a RS book, but if you're the kind of person that enjoys lots of love and romance and sex then you'll probably find this book lacking.

The characters... I love the way that the heroine in this book is strong and kick-ass.

I found this book slow to start with and felt it wasn't her best novel
, but ... once I got into it I enjoyed it just as much as all of Toni Anderson's other stories, a very good read , I'm looking forward to the next one!

I really got enthralled into this, I love anything "Cat" so rescuing Snow Leopards is so, something I'd do & given a chunk of candy 2 snuggle with just makes it all the better. I just wish the proof readers would do a better job on the electronic version , I haven't read a book yet without having to figure out what a word is supposed 2B or stick a few dozen comma's. & full stops in the script , come on, it's really irritating reading a professional looking book with amateur spelling!!

Not much of a plot 30% story and 70% Cam and Daniels sex life. Couldn't relate much to any of the characters and didn't enjoy the weak it or Toni Andersons description of the area she set her story in. Disappointing.

It wasn't until 25% of the way through the book that I really started to get into it. The other 75% has been totally enthralling up to the end with unexpected twists and turns.
