Several of the stories could even sustain longer books: I would quite happily read more about Seb and Lisa from Colette McBeth’s The Edge, Shirley from Stop the Pigeon by Louise Voss, DI Berenice Killick and DS Mary Ashcroft from Alison Joseph’s The Day of the Dead and Denise from Chance by Laura Wilson.
All of the stories are worth reading but other particular highlights for me were Alex Marwood’s creepy On the Undercliff, Melanie McGrath’s hilariously twisted Schiaparelli Pink Bikini and Erin Kelly’s tragic Don’t Know Where, Don’t Know When.
A few of the stories suffer a little simply from being in an anthology called Killer Women because it means you know something about what to expect and can take the edge off some of the twists.
Nevertheless, this is a successful first anthology from the Killer Women and a great introduction to authors I will go on to read more from – and I have already bought Anthology #2!
I admit that I'm not usually one for short story collections. I tend to read full length novels, not even novellas. But having entered a reading slump recently, I realised it was time to get stuck into this anthology again. And this was the best thing I could have done. It was so easy to dip into whenever there was a spare moment and I could read a whole story at a time, feeling a sense of completion at the end.
The Killer Women are an incredibly talented bunch of women. The stories in their collection are all very different, providing something for everyone. These twisted tales are full of shocks, surprises and dark humour. Some are chilling, some are creepy, some are stomach churning and some are totally offbeat and 'laugh out loud' reads.
The Killer Women: Crime Club Anthology #1 is a fantastic introduction to 15 amazing authors and offers the reader great value for money. I'm assuming (and hoping) that there are more collections to come.
Do I have a favourite story? Maybe. But my lips are sealed. Buy the book and work out which one is your favourite. I have no doubt that everyone will find their own.
I received an Advance Reader Copy (but actually bought the e-book too).
This is the sort of book by its very nature you can dip in and out of when you are between books. Each short story was different, some I found a bit frustrating as characters didnt have time to develop and some I found that I wished were a full blown book. On the whole I enjoyed reading the book as it was a great way to be introduced to authors I had not come across before and has just made my wish list longer.
