St.KildaThis book I would consider vital for anyone who is proposing to visit St. Kilda. Having spent nearly a year on there when doing my national service I can vouch for the accurate information included and the quality of the publication I consider, to be excellant and very informative. The choice and quality of the photographs is first class. Try and but the st Kilda map to go with it produced by colin baxter(ISBN 1-84107-327-X

not having purchased this guide while on the island I orderd it from Amazon - it came by the usual speedy route. Good and glossy but not a lot of actual information - the photos do not indicate the atmosphere of the island as it is now - really aimed at the casual tourist not the ardent reader who needs to know more!

It's one of those places that is difficult to reach, the book provoked a challenge to go there some point - the remoteness of St Kilda is the main attraction

Excellent pictures of an enchanting Isle. Tells the story and provides a really good map. A wonderful reminder of our brief visit and helps to put names to my photographs.

This book is without doubt a labour of love by the author. It deals with the archipelago of islaands collectively known as St.Kilda which lie 40 miles from the Western Isles and 100 miles from mainland Scotland. THere are 4 islands-Hirta,Dun,Soay and Boreray the first was inhabited from c1850 B.C. to 1930 when it was evacuated, the other 3 islands were left to sheep and birds. There are many stacs (rocky outcrops from the sea.The book is dividedinto 5 main parts recording Hirta, other islands and stacs, boeray and its stacs plus a historical background. In the appendix is a marvellous chronologyand detailed plant and bird checklists. The maps, diagrams, sketches and photographs are of a high standard.
