This 1977 Kiki Dee release is simply one of the best records ever made, to my musical taste obviously. First of all Kiki's voice is beautiful and surely would deserve wider recognition. But that's not all: she penned herself five songs on this album and co-wrote another two, which is perhaps a lesser known side of Kiki Dee. The contribution of Keyboardist/composer Bias Boshell with two great songs is also remarkable. Then we have the great musicians (most of them worked with Elton John, producer of the album) with special attention to the great guitar man Davey Johnstone who's all over... and the also the great James Newton-Howard. Then we have the exquisite orchestral arrangements, the horn arrangements with the Brecker Brothers (incl. great sax wizard Michael Brecker who sadly passed away recently) and another one of my favourites David Sanborn on alto sax (what a solo on "Keep right on"!).
This is a kind of soul-jazzy-funk-soft rock that I love so much, close to Steely Dan's music, I should say. There are no weak tracks, I love all of them, but I can't help make a special remark on "Keep right on" and "In return". And then the sound quality is unbelievable for a 1977 record, better than many recent releases...
In the year of 1977 I was 20 and was living in London, I had the privilege of attending a Kiki Dee concert, I absolutely loved it. I bought this album (vinyl) at that time, fell in love with it, 31 years later I bought the re-issued CD, and although my musical taste has grown onto a jazzier side (so to speak), I still consider this one of the best albuns ever recorded. For younger generations who never heard of Kiki Dee or even for elder ones who only know her for the duet with Elton John "Don't go breaking my heart" I stongly recommend that you buy this CD. You won't regret it.
Thank you Ms Kiki Dee for giving me such beautiful musical moments.

This was Kiki's 4th album for Rocket Records following on from Loving and Free - 1973 I've Got The Music In Me - 1974 and the previously unreleased Cage The Songbird - 1975 .
Released in early 1977 this set really shines because it showcases Kiki's vocal range perfectly. On the uptempo tracks such as Chicago, First Thing In The Morning and Keep Right On she displays the gustier bluesier side of her range.Kiki's own songs - of which there are six here - tend to be more reflective and show a softer warmer vocal style - the standouts here are Bad Day Child, In Return, Walking and the sublime Night Hours.
It's fantastic to see that all of Kiki's back catalogue has at long last been issued on cd - why not give this a try .
