The musical evolution in just a few albums from Radiohead is astonishing to me, even today, they are truly a one off!
At the time, Oct 2000, this side step from The Bends/OK Computer approach to recording was a bumpy one in the music media, and yet for many lovers of the bands ethos, it made sense to go their own way. A sometimes baffling array of new ideas and process drive this fantastic album experience all the way to the final track, the exstraordinary 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'! It seems to deepen it's hold on you after each play and for me is very much a 'listen to it all in a oner' kinda thing. Perfect collisions of soundscapes, electronica and and even Avante-guard jazz permeate the whole thing beautifully. The title track alone is worth the money!! Just incrediable music from a class act who at the time were in danger of imploding!! I saw them do the Glasgow Green gig (in a tent) Sept 2000 when they did most of this album and blew us away with what was to come on an amazing record. Now nearly 25 years later it still has the power to take your breath away!

I came late to Radiohead, but not too late it seems. I've been listening to Kid A on and off since my son showed me 'Idioteque' live on Youtube about 3 years ago, and I'm still finding detail and subtlety in the haunting melodies and arrangements. Listening again today on headphones, I enter a world so far from what Rock Music is about that you might not believe that this was produced by the same band that offered us The Bends.
This a world where life is full only of fragments of dreams and nightmares. Electronic treatments and samples are cut and paste like some aural Guernica - stark images of horror, yearning, loss - and held together by droning basslines, soaring strings that mimic the inevitability that life, with all its faults, forces us on from one day to the next. Bleak, yes, but very human and without loud political bombast, Radiohead offer insights into the fabric of living that no other comparable musicians dare consider.
To the reader looking for a guide ("This is worth listening to if you also like the music of xxx!") you'll like it if you like music that takes you to places that are uncomfortably familiar only when you are asleep, when you were a child, when you were gripped by despair that you would ever escape your pain...
This is the antithesis of Ambient and ChillOut...and no less enjoyable!

Kid A is up there with the best of Radiohead and that means the best of the last twenty years. A break from their more guitar-based earlier work, but a logical progression from the inquisitive side of OK Computer, Kid A is far more concerned with texture and far less concerned with verse/chorus/verse. No bad thing: tracks like the opening Everything in Its Right Place, Idiotheque and The National Anthem have become staples of Radiohead shows since, and classics in their own right. For me the essence of this album is its suggestiveness: nothing is overegged and nothing outstays its welcome. The vinyl brings out an emotional warmth in this electronic-based music, but retains a punch when needed. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

I'm not a huge Radiohead connoisseur though I saw them very early on an had their Pablo Honey (on cassette!) .I also know OK Computer and have heard Hail To The Chief(which I didn't like much).
This is something else entirely and I understand the Radiohead fans who don't like it as it's not a guitar- lead album and quite different from their other work.
Personally,I think it's an absolute masterpiece. This is atmospheric, beautiful music and I have been listening to it solidly since I bought it.
There's a track that reminds me of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz( The National Anthem) and at times I think that this is the best avant garde music I have heard in a Rock idiom since the first two Soft Machine albums,One and Two . I listen to Varese,Messien and a lot of Jazz and this album f sitst very exactly beside them as a bona fide avant garde masterpiece. Fantastic !

'Kid A' (2000) represented a shift towards very bleak territory indeed for a band who, let's face it, have always tended to look on the black side of the human condition. This release reflected Thom Yorke's disturbed state of mind in the late 1990s and, both musically and lyrically, the 'soundscape' created is highly atmospheric with the emphasis centred on electronic music, rather than based around the distinctive guitar hooks of Jonny Greenwood to drive the material forwards - a feature which made albums such as 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer' so popular in the mid-1990's. Unsurprisingly, there were no hit singles from this album, reflecting the conscious effort made by Radiohead to deliver a radically different style; a brave move and a decision which certainly split the music critics (although, to be fair, the overall reaction to Kid A was positive).
Most importantly, do I like this album ? Personally, I had to persevere with it in an attempt to appreciate all of its finer points but, even so, I can't in all honesty say that I have found listening to 'Kid A' makes for a comforting experience. However, there are some daring and quite brilliant sections which show just how innovative these guys are. In conclusion, I would simply say that 'Kid A' is well worth buying, but, it is probably wise to start your Radiohead education by buying one of their first 3 studio albums with 'The Bends' possibly representing the best option.

Almost a quarter of a century on, Kid A remains beyond compare. It isn’t hyperbole to claim this record marks both the end of a world, of rock n roll, and the arrival of an embryonic new one. We still don’t seem to have the words for it, a testament to the sheer majesty of these songs. This is BC/AD before/after stuff; we await, headphones at the ready, its second coming.
