I read the book over the weekend and interview Lynda today, prior to the UK launch of the book this evening.

If you are sick of reading all the bad news and criticism about corporations (much of it deserved), and would prefer to read about possible solutions, then read this book. It is influenced by the writings of Charles Handy and is dedicated to him. He spoke at the launch and made a very emphatic statement. Citing Milton Friedmans famous quote, "The business of business is business” (which summarised friendmans argument that the only social responsibility of business is“(…) to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game”), he totally rejected it, saying time had proven the statement wrong and arguing, "The business of business is NOT business", The business of business is bigger than business". Lynda's book is a call to corporates to take the bigger and more responsible role, and it is fitting that she chose to dedicate it to him.

Every business leader needs to read it, and every manager would also do well to. it is primarily about corporates and aimed at them, but there is also plenty in this book for business leaders of all sizes and stages. It is going to be a book that is widely read for a long time and I urge you not just to read it, but to practice the ideas in it and share them. Oh, and there are resources online designed to build a community, perhaps a movement, around the notion of the corporate as a force for good.

As a recent twenty-something graduate considering the impact that I want to have in my career, Lynda Gratton's new book has truly spoken to me. I am passionate about pursuing a career in business/business academia and about bettering this society and this planet. Many times, I feel lost as to how to combine those passions – how do I further my career climb while making sure that I am addressing the societal injustices that are near and dear to my heart? Despite the ambivalent feelings that many, including me, hold towards corporations, I urge you to give this book a chance. Gratton makes a compelling, well-researched, and practical case that corporations possess the power, the responsibility, and the capability to make this world a better place. Regardless of where you are in your career, I think Gratton's optimism will urge you to think bigger than yourself, your career, your community and your corporation to what it means and what it might look like to change the world for good.

Not finished the book yet however I am always positively impressed by Lynda's work and her way of putting it across which makes it easy to read and fast to grasp the essentials of her thesis and ideas. There can be no doubt that we need new thinking and ways to deal with what we are facing and will face the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) and how we can prepare and think about this will help our brains change and adapt to this new environment we are having to deal with.

A very interesting and different perspective on the world of work internationally and the role responsible corporations are getting involved in solving wider problems to the benefit of us all

This is one of those business books that can be read for practical advice, for intellectual inspiration, for the sheer joy of it, or all of the above. I had great expectations since Lynda Gratton is one of the early pioneering voices on resilience, has researched many of the world's most innovative companies for decades and has a keen eye for new ideas. I was not disappointed. Grounded in real examples and propelled by solid research, this book takes the discussion about resilience to a new level by clearly describing what it takes for leaders and employees to collectively make the corporation a force for good in the world.
