Product description
Australia released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), German ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), German ( Subtitles ), Turkish ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: British filmmaking showed much of it potential in this marvelous production chronicling the boyhood experiences of Billy, whose expectations lead no further than following his father into the pits when he reaches manhood. Everything changes when he finds KES, an injured Kestrel, whom he nurses and cherishes back to health. Their relationship becomes symbolic of a doomed attempt to escape the drudgery of the industrial North. KES is a marvelous, moving and compassionate film, so realistic that it is often funny. Written and directed by one of the most politically committed of British filmmakers, KES is an astute authentic analysis of society at large.

And I thoroughly recommend it.
A work of art.
One of the best films I’ve ever seen ( if not thee best. )
I thought, for a couple of quid more, I may as well buy it, as no doubt I would like to watch it again sometime in the future.
There was 2 Kes films to choose from.
I advise to choose the other one.
The picture quality of this one is crap.
It’s too dark.
Why do most of us (non-Americans) like the film despite the horrible content? Partly I suspect because it takes us back, and anything that takes us back brings back feelings of vigour and an unknown future - simply makes us feel young again. Partly because we see something that speaks for us; says, 'this is how it was (is)' but by letting us see, not by telling us. We want others to see, and I'm very glad to see that this film is listed as one of the essential films to see before you leave school, but I wonder how many schools do ever show it, and other meaningful films, along with real discussions about the message. We also like the film for it's occasional glimpses of kindness from some individuals (free chips and one teacher who does understand yet is totally a prisoner to the system) that remind us of what is good. Films have great power to convey what cannot be said, because meaning is 'episodic', it involves the setting up of situations and the working out of stories along with the stimulation of emotions; yet as another has commented here, most films watched by kids are likely to be from America (where they don't 'get' this stuff at all) and about people ordering each other around, acting on impulse, and killing.
Meanwhile too many youngsters will go on starving themselves and cutting themselves - in order to replace the mental pain of their lives, or to take what control they can in a world gone wrong. We need more films like this, and we need to make time for them in education. The Americans have one thing in their favour - a huge shift to home-schooling, though I suspect this is too often for religious reasons.
There's nothing much to say about the DVD and delivery. All as expected. Playback was fine. It's a DVD :)
The real thing to note is that the film captures a slice of South Yorkshire life, of its time, in a gritty and realistic way. There are moments of genuine comedy (unintentional, I think, but resonating with the viewer) and many moments of pathos.
It's what might be called a "charming little film" and particularly for anyone from the region, or who knows the region, it will bring back many memories of a time that has passed by.
The lead character actor was chosen from local schoolboys and had never acted before. He gives the most amazing performance, but I hesitate to call it a performance. It's almost like they secretly filmed him going about his real life. The acting is that good and that natural that it creates an uninterrupted "suspension of disbelief".
It is, in all its aspects including the brutality in some scenes, a film that will reward the watching multiple times. It has become, in fact, an iconic film to such an extent that in many places where it was shot you can see street art relating to the Billy character.
I met the actor who played Billy Casper ("Dai" or David Bradley) in an Asda one time. He was charming and gracious and looked exactly the same, if a little older. He's gone on to do a lot of other work on stage, TV and film and retains a naturalness about him that was first seen in this gem of a film.
The extent of this film's influence on me and my family is that we still quote, to this day, certain phrases from it. Having seen it about 40 years ago I think that shows how much the film has stayed with us.
Hard to praise this film enough, although whether it will resonate quite as strongly with people who know nothing about the North, where it was filmed, I'm not sure. It is, however, a wonderful snapshot of life at a certain time and place in the UK.
Highly recommended.
