I had an old model of one of these for about 17 yrs that I bought from Argos for about £38 at the time which finally broke couple months ago. This new version was bought as replacement. I was pleasantly surprised to find a steamer with it which is handy for doing some steamed veg while cooking your rice. It is also very handy to use as a steamer in it's own right.

It does spit a bit while cooking and I would point out that is unavoidable when cooking rice - so it's NOT a product fault!! It can be reduced by putting tea towel over & around lid/air hole (or as someone commented below, have the steamer on). The inside being non-stick makes it really easy to wash - the old one would need soaking first to soften the hardened rice on the bottom.
You CAN cook less than 3 cups in these cookers - contrary to instructions - I've cooked 1 and half cups(with 3 cups of water long grain white rice) and that provides generous portions for 2 people or 2 meals worth for one.
[I've also frequently re-cooked rice in my old one because I'm a regular rice eater and often cooked few portions at a time it's much quicker next day (by pouring 1 cup water around edge)and it's always been fine & never did me any harm for all these yrs or the cooker. Hopefully new one also, so far so good.] It's especially good/convenient for cooking rice for a lot of people.
I think Kenwood's rice cookers are excellent and hopefully this lasts me at least the next 10 yrs!

I don't usually write reviews on products, but felt compelled to do so on this occasion. I am sure there is nothing wrong with the functionality of this product, however I didn't get the chance to use mine. Upon receiving the product I was surprised to read in the instructions that the minimum capacity was 3 cups, with 1 cup being recommended per person so I decided to perform a little test and weighed out how much rice the provided cup contained this equated to over 4 ounces of rice (which is quite a lot of rice for one person), therefore using the recommended quantity of rice this would equate to 12 ounces. This quantity is twice as much used to cook for two of us.

The point of this review is to warn anyone either living on their own or as in my household there are only two of us not to buy this product unless you really like rice. It would have really helped me make my decision if the description of the product had included the minimum capacity as well as the maximum as I would not have purchased the product if I had known this information, especially as I now wish to return the product and will have to pay for the privledge. I don't blame Amazon as the Kenwood website doesn't include this information in their description either, but would recommend that Amazon add the minimum quantity to help future customers.

This replaced my Tefal which was very good and lasted since the mid 80's but then started getting a little temperamental (switching off early). When I received the Kenwood, I realised that it was identical to the one just re-cycled, except that it had been tarted up a little. Excellent, I look forward to another couple of decades of reliable service. Pity they didn't include the rack for boiling eggs, which was also very useful, luckily, I salvaged the Tefal one from my recycling bin so all is perfect.

I choose this model partly because I previously had a Kenwood Rice Cooker which gave up the ghost after 15 years
This product is ideal for my rice loving family of 5 ( I typically cook about 13 oz/ 370 g of basmati rice using 2 litres of boiling water- about 1/3rd of capacity). This takes about 25 minutes for the indicator light to switch from Cook to Warm- which indicates that the rice is ready. In practice I wait another 5 minutes or so before I serve up as I find that the rice is still a bit damp when the light first switches but is OK after this extra period. The rice is properly cooked, fluffy and grains separate out easily. You can leave the rice on warm for at least another hour on warm without worry of affecting the quality of the rice so it is good for dinner parties.
The rice is cooked in a non-stick bowl and you can serve rice using the provided white plastic spatula (which helps to preserve the non-stick surface). One of the handles provides a space to store the spatula when not in use.
The transparent lid allows you to see how much water is left as it is cooking. This lid also has a small hole in the top which allows steam to escape during the cooking process, this is better than old models where the steam escaped by lifting the loose fitting lid. You just need to be careful not to put your hand over the steam while it is cooking in case you scold yourself.
One feature I haven't used is the steaming tray, which is energy and space efficient as you can use the same steam to cook your rice and vegetables. The only drawback I can see with this is if you are fussy about having pure flavoured rice. During cooking of your vegetables some of the water soluble flavourings could end up in the rice.

I was surprised when this arrived for 2 reasons: 1) the minimum amount you can cook is for 3-4 people (not mentioned on the Amazon page); 2) after the indicator says the rice has finished cooking the instructions say to leave it for another 15 minutes, so the total cooking time is really long. Having tested the cooker, I now ignore the resting time as the rice seems to be cooked by then & it also avoids the burnt bottom rice mentioned in other reviews. However, as there are just 2 of us I rarely use it unless I am cooking for guests or doing a rice-based meal in it, e.g. biryani. On these occasions it works a treat but it does take up a lot of space in my cupboard at all other times. I need to invite friends round more often!
