I love my new Kenwood Major, I had an old hand me down Kenwood Chef for many years and it had served me extremely well, considering it was around the same age as me! I use my mixer a lot as I'm self employed and bake from home, so when my old Kenwood Chef was starting to look very tired, and the catch didn't hold so the attachment would lift out of the bowl unless held down, I considered what to do, I couldn't do without one and I wanted something just as powerful and hard wearing as the old one. To be honest although I did look at other brands I didn't really consider them seriously as Kenwood have such an excellent reputation and if my old machine was anything to go by then a new model should last me many, many years! As I bake for a living and do quite large batches of cakes I opted for the Major titanium as it offered everything I could want, the larger bowl, the most powerful motor and the great attachments, they are so beautiful by the way, I intend to put up a shelf in my kitchen to display them when not in use. Overall since I received the machine I haven't looked back, it does everything I want it to and more, my only comment to those looking to buy one would be shop around for the best price, I have seen it as low as £399, although when I bought it was £429 and now it has shot up even higher, the price on amazon does vary greatly depending on stock and the competitions price!

I bought mine several years ago when I was baking commercially for a farm shop. I came to this page to see how others viewed the machine and decided to add my thoughts as a user who has had this in her kitchen for years. The photo on this page is taken from below, a sort of Kenwood Major Selfie, it does make the machine look even more towering and impressive. Mine is a Kenwood Chef Major and looks just like the photo. However a Titanium model being demonstrated online by another kitchen goods supplier shows electronic digital controls and two other buttons. You might need to check which model you are buying as the photo here doesn't show those more modern features.

This machine does have a problem or two - firstly - a Soggy Bottom! The base, where the bowl sits, deteriorates very quickly under the white, round plastic mat that the bowl rests on. The thin paint quickly rots away leaving pitting and scarring. This paint appears to only be used on the body of the mixer and cannot stand up to regular use. We sanded mine down and painted it with silver metal paint. Now it looks better. Also there are various channels in the head of the mixer that collect debris and are difficult to clean effectively. This is poor.

It is true, that unless you use Mrs. Beeton's recipes, 'Take Twelve Eggs', the mixture can remain stubbornly coated around the bottom of the huge bowl. Disappointingly, unless you are clever enough to realise/read the instructions that indicate the tools can be adjusted, you may have to flip up the mixer and scrape the hardened butter and sugar several times. Do look online for directions, in video, on how to adjust your tools so as to reach all around the bowl. This worked for me.

This is a beast of a mixer. If it was a car it would be a Landrover. It is built to last and is incredibley powerfull. Nothing phases it. It is one of the few kitchen appliances that I would call "Engineered". It is built using bolts and screws not plastic clips and I imagine that if it ever went wrong it could actually be repaired. I bought my wife a Kenwood Chef a couple of years ago as a surprise. She had said up to that point that she didnt need one, it was too big, she could knead bread by hand etc. Lets just say that once she started to use it that she did not go back to kneading bread by hand. I also bought a few attachments. A meat grinder, a spice mill and a short pasta maker. All of them are as robust as the machine itself and all fit the Major. The short pasta maker extrudes the pasta through brass dies which are incredibly well turned not just stamped out. This bigger machine is to replace the smaller one so she can knead larger amounts of bread dough. The smaller one has been passed on to a younger family member as it still works perfectly. These are brilliant machines and actually become members of the family.

This has all the solid engineering qualities you's expect from Kenwood, and more. It seems to be fantastically efficient. I make wedding cakes (cmcakes.co.uk) and it copes effortlessly with the large batches of cake mixture I require. It's also brilliant for more delicate whisking procedures - I use it for French macarons. At the other extreme I also mix bread dough in it, which it also handles without any apparent strain.

For cake mixtures the flexible beater is a clever invention which greatly reduces the need to stop the machine and scrape down, so speeds up the cake making process quite a bit.

The splash guard is effective too. No more icing sugar snowstorms when mixing butter cream or royal icing... I managed to detach the flap while washing the guard - something to watch out for - as it was quite tricky getting in back on, although I eventually managed to click it into place. The food processor attachment is great too. I've not used the blender yet as I haven't had the machine all that long but it seems really solid and well made. I fully expect this machine to outlive me! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any serious baker or cook, especially if it's needed in a professional or semi-professional capacity, or if you're catering for several people.
