We were intrigued by these Kent's Kitchen Meal kits for Thai red curry.
Inside the cardboard container are 4 coulourful plasic boxes which each have three pots for all of the spices and oil needed to be used with freahly bought ingredients.
We had just bought fresh chicken and several tins of coconut milk from our amazing Aldi.
The instructions are hidden behind the ingredients list in very small print. Two options, use a magnifying glass or what I did, scan them and display as a .pdf on my Samsung tablet.
The instructions confusingly say for 2 or 4 people. We cooked four chicken breasts, a whole can of coconut milk and lots of veggies and the resulting Thai curry with our favourite brown rice was as good as we have had in our local Thai restaurant.I think only two chicken breasts etc. would have resulted in too strong a flavour.
There are 14 different flavours of meal available. I wish it was possible to buy a mixed selection, They would then make great gifts and also allow us to experiment with meals from around the world.
What you get.
You get the infused oil to cook the chicken in, pot of herbs and spices and flavouring sauce. You need to add fresh meat and vegetables to make the curry.
Easy to use.
Making the curry is so easy, just cook the chicken in the oil add vegetables to taste and then the spices, coconut and sauce. It took me less than half an hour from start to finish.
The first curry we made was excellent and the ingredients supplied worked well and made a decent curry for 3 people - 4 at a push. These are excellent value as everything spice and oil wise is there, no more trying to find that missing ingredient or having to rush out to get it. We are looking forward to our next one.
I will be ordering some more items from Kent's kitchen as the system works and the results are very nice !
I made a kit for two of us tonight and I think there is too much oil if using it for two. I only used half and it all came out fine with no oil left on the plate.
Like the Green Thai curry I have also tried, this kit is pretty easy to throw together and has the usual problems with the not very helpful instructions label! Also like the other kit, obviously apart from adding meat which is a given, it doesn't bother me to have to add tomatoes and peppers, and the resulting curry was very tasty, and as I say a lot less spicy than I was expecting. These come in packs of 4 and I'm more than happy to finish them off over the next few weeks.
Would love a mixed selection lack, as we'd love to try the other curries and meals in this range, but don't want to buy four at once (just in case!)
Overall presentation of the dish looked really good and for a quick meal it looked nice and tasted fantastic. It is ideal for anyone working late and wanting a quick dinner but I would also have no hesitations serving it for guests coming for dinner. I am not the biggest fan of spicy food and it was hot for me but it still tasted delicious. It reminded me of some of the meals I had in Thailand and I thought it was quite authentic.
I really want to try some of the other meal kits now. It would be great if you could get a variety box which has four different meal kits (eg. Green Thai Curry, Red Thai Curry, Chicken Chow Mein and a Spicy Korma) rather than four of the same.
I am very impressed. Three of us tried this meal kit and we all thought it tasted great. Everyone gave it 5 out of 5 stars. Much nicer than a jar of sauce!
Be aware that the cooking instructions are inside the sticky label on the back of the pack in quite small writing so very hard to miss.
