I've tried a few of these FM transmitters in the past, mainly bought from a well known auction site, but I've also tried another well known brand (starts with a B and ends with elkin) ;) and always had the same problems - poor sound quality, no bottom end and very, very hissy. However, it gets frustrating knowing I've got hundreds of albums stored on my mp3 player and can't access them through my car system. So... I read the reviews of this Kensington unit and it seemed to be better, and I took the plunge (again!). It arrived yesterday and I hooked it up within minutes to a spare frequency on my car stereo. I connected my mp3 player with bated breath and pressed play..... WOW! No hiss, decent bottom end, fantastic. Today I drove the 40 miles to work and was anticipating having to retune a couple of times, but I only had to do so once.

The manual says to have your source at about 75% of full volume, but I'd say keep it to nearer 50% otherwise you get a bit of distortion at the top end, but that's maybe just my mp3 player.

I'd recommend this transmitter to anyone who is thinking about buying one, especially those who have already bought cheaper, inferior quality ones and were disappointed with the output quality.

I bought this item after reading other comments here and having also been dissapointed with cheaper units. Upon quickly trying it with a Samsung MP3 player in my Nissan Almera mid-size hatchback with rear bee-sting roof antenna the sound was immediate, strong and clear. The Phillips radio and Kensington transmitter were tuned to 88.1FM as suggested by the Leicester reviewer. The sound quality was noticeably better than my earlier transmitters. Kensington's pack, user instructions and customer support lend confidence to the product. My transmitter came from Avides, Germany, in about three days. It cost around £12, little more than a cheaper shoddy transmitter I returned to an Ebay seller who neither replied or refunded costs. I have used Amazon seller Avides before and been pleased with their service. They seem to use 'green' postal packaging materials where possible; cardboard outer packing with recycled brown paper inside to cushion goods; no plastic bubble wrap. I will try to add to this transmitter review after more use from it. But my first reactions are positive and pleasing.

Re. possible cutting out during quiet passages or pauses in music - I have found this tendency in two newer 'usb' hi-fi units and have come to accept this characteristic in 'digital' music gear. Perhaps the Kensington is no exception; not a problem to me so far.

Further info. added: Sept. 08 Having used the transmitter more since my first comments I'm still just as pleased. Cutting out sometimes occurs during very quiet passages in classical music but setting the player's volume higher for such music helps minimise or eliminate this. If you have problems it's worth trying different volume settings on the radio and MP3 player to find the best results as others have suggested. I've also found that this transmitter works extremely well with the old tuning knob car radio in my motor boat cabin. A real bonus as it's no longer necessary to carry or store music cassettes or CD's.

Very disappointed. Previously I had used a much less expensive FM transmitter that had the added bonus of a USB port as well as minature jack but this was affected by the recent cold weather and it decided to switch off or change frequency for no apparent reason. So having read all the great reviews for the Kensington I placed the order and was looking forward to some HiFi quality in the car. Unfortunately I have got poor sound quality with very little top end frequency response, a lot of white noise (that's the hiss for those that don't know) at all FM frequencies and I have to turn the rdaio volume up to almost full before I can hear anything (yes the MP3 volume is also at full). So I tried it in the house using a jump starter with an accessory socket, and with the HiFi. Just the same I'm afraid. The only way to get rid of the noise is to place the Kensington within 30cm of the antenna. So I will be getting another of the cheaper type I had before  USB Flash Memory MP3 Adapter with 7 FM Channels , which gives a good audio response and very little radio noise.

This is an excellent idea, and the unit is extremely well built and easy to set up. However the bandwidth (88 - 104) over which the unit can be tuned almost invariably overlaps with commercial radio stations, with the result that one has to keep retuning, which is not really an option if driving. I used this recently while driving on the M1 between Mansfield and Milton Keynes, which is about a 90 minute journey, and got about 10 minutes uninterrupted use out of it. If one if living in the highlands, wales or some remote corner of south west england where the airwaves are less congested this may be the solution for you, but if not start saving up for an in-car mp3 player.

I have two cars, one a Honda CRV with the aerial right at the back on the roof and the other an MX5 with the aerial on the rear wing. MX5, works well, no problems at all but the Honda was more troublesome with variable signal level on the radio due to the greater transmitter range required. The position of the connecting lead from the Kensington had a considerable effect on the signal received.

As has been noted here before, keep the sound level down from your MP3 player otherwise the transmitter is overloaded and distorts the audio. Also turn off any equaliser setting for the same reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great

I had a Belkin transmitter. I bought it because it had a broad range of stations and I live in Cleveland,OH where there is FM saturation. With the Belkin, even when stations had no "signal" there was still a low hiss or transmitter hum because the FM transmitter signal was weak. With the Kensington the FM transmitter signal is very strong and I have no problems when I am on frequencies that have no "signal" and can sometimes even use it on frequencies that have a weak signal from a distant station. I have had no problem setting the presets. I would buy it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch the wire!
Reviewed in the United States on 22 November 2008
I bought one of these last year and it was great, little or no static or interference. This one transmits especially well. You can't go wrong for [...].
One major problem with it is the wire. Be careful with it!
When you connect it to your power outlet be careful not to pinch or pull on the wire especially if your power outlet is recessed in the dashboard. It'll become detached and you'll end up having one channel go out. You can play with it and have both channels work but eventually it'll fail totally.
Also the wire protrudes out of the left side of the unit. If you want to keep your player in your lap while driving ok but if you keep it anywhere else this will cause the wire to become pinched.
A good idea with this unit would be to plug it in vertically or sideways or even upside down so as not to pinch or pull on the wire. Make sure there's no tension on it. The looser the better. It'll last longer that way.
I really like this transmitter and bought another after my first one suffered the pinched wire fate after a year.
I'd encourage anyone to try this out,it's a good one.
JUST DON'T PINCH OR PULL ON THE WIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gute Übertragung und guter Sound
