Product Description

The late Kenneth Williams entertains an audience of celebrities live in this recording from 1982. Kenneth recalls his work in radio with the likes of Kenneth Horne and Tony Hancock, his theatrical ventures (he worked at various times with Orson Welles, Ingrid Bergman and Dame Maggie Smith) and the infamous 'Carry On' films. Those asking the questions include Gordon Jackson, Judith Chalmers and Matthew Kelly.

From Amazon.co.uk

By the time he recorded An Audience with Kenneth Williams in 1982, the comic actor had virtually given up the stage and screen and was well into his late career as a raconteur. As a potted hour of autobiography, it's a slick, polished affair. Fans will be familiar with the anecdotes about Noel Coward and piles, Edith Evans and the farting waiter and of course, the Carry On films. But perhaps the most notable thing is that while his posthumously published diaries revealed a dark and bitter melancholia, often aimed viciously at others, he was a very generous performer. These are mainly tales about other people; Williams rarely puts himself centre stage other than in his masterly telling. And there is real warmth in his reminiscences of people like Maggie Smith, Gordon Jackson and Hattie Jacques.

He was also a highly intelligent commentator on his craft. "Revue produces an eccentric, very stylised performer," he explains, talking about Smith and Fenella Fielding but clearly including himself. Although many of the stars in the audience are long since gone it's somehow reassuring to note that still, more than 20 years later, no televised evening with a celebrity is complete without Judith Chalmers and Matthew Kelly.--Piers Ford --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Kenneth Williams - An Audience With, is very good value for a DVD that runs to around 77 minutes and offers us the definitve Kenneth Williams stand up recording. Kenneth had all the family in hysterics as he recalled to the audience his meeting of Edith Evans and also how Noel Coward caught him at a most inopportune moment! There is also the Rambling Syd Rumpo songs from Round The Horne and tales of his time working on Tony Hancock's radio shows. And of course the master of the double-entendre has plenty to say about the antics off screen on several movies, which prove to be a right Carry On!
He also has some personal stories about some of the greats of film and theatre, including Richard Burton, Orson Welles, Judy Garland and Maggie Smith.
Among the celebrities in the audience is, Matthew Kelly, Michael Parkinson, Judith Chalmers, William Roache, and many many more.
This is recommended very highly as it is amazingly good value, both the sound and picture are quite superb, and of course this is Kenneth at his very best - stop messing about!

Amazon ordered this wonderful DVD via Euroleisure (delivered on time and exactly what was advertised). However, what the blurb didn't say was that you would be transported into the audience, along with a plethora of celebraties, to enjoy this marvellous, and sadly missed, comedian's performance. The pre-show snippet was highly amusing, down to the hole in the elbow of Kenneth's cardigan.
Buy this and lose yourself in unadulterated mirth and reminiscences and enjoy, again and again, Kenneth Williams at his very best.

This was a very good reminder of just how good Kenneth Williams was! The video is over an hour long and well worth the money. The whole family laughed hysterically as Williams spun his verbal wit to an audience that included, among others, Matthew Kelly, William Roache and Michael Parkinson, oh and surprisingly Mary Whiehouse!
Among the songs he also sings in the show are the great ones from his Round The Horne radio days, the Rambling Syd Rumpo numbers, he also recounts his days on that show as part of the camp duo of Julian & Sandy. Not to mention his tales of working with Tony Hancock, Orson Welles, Richard Burton and of course the stars of the great Carry On movies.
The whole show was a wonderful example of one of the all time funnymen and not once does it fail to amuse, recommended with top marks and endless laughs!

There are a couple of things that Kenneth Williams would always guarantee: first, he was a great story-teller, and second, he was a genuinely funny man - a one-off true original. Give Ken an audience and he had the ability to reduce them to tears of laughter with minimum effort - witness his many appearances on the radio episodes of Hancocks Half Hour when a simple "Hello" or "Stop Messing About", delivered by his character Snide had the live audience roaring with laughter.

This dvd is a wonderful reminder of a talent sadly missed but never forgotten.

Almost all of Kenneth's great stories are here, brilliantly told, as ever. This has become THE great KW recorded performance. It is even quite moving in parts, such as his loving tribute to Hattie Jacques. A treasure.

One of the first 'an audience with' shows from LWT London. Kenneth Williams uses the opportunity to shine, keeping the audience captivated with tales from the army and beyond.

Really enjoyed this and watched it lots of times already, and a bargain price to boot.

I bought this DVD purely out of whim, knowing absolutely nothing about Kennet Williams but being a fan of Gordon Jackson and seeing he was credited among the audience. Took me weeks before I put the disc into player, and the first minutes my eyebrows rose higher and higher in front of this elderly chappie, but the next good hour I was constantly holding my tummy, laughing uncontrollably! What a performer! What a comedian!
Oh and needless to say, I absolutely love this and it will be watched many times... unlike most present-day "comedies" or "comedians". A huge Thank You for the intelligent person who decided that this program should be preserved into DVD.

A brilliant souvenir of this sadly-missed comedian's work. Includes his immortal rendering of 'Crepe Suzette' among many other gems.
