Described by the publisher as "The first biography of Kenneth Clarke, Chancellor of the Exchequer" this book is arguably premature, as an evaluation of the man and of his achievements would ideally have been attempted from a more detached historical viewpoint. As the (incomplete) biography stands it seems rather to peter out at the end, where we leave Mr. Clarke as a serving Minister - described on the book jacket as "the most important figure in John Major's Conservative Government" - and with Mr. Balen lacking the manoeuvrability to form a full judgement. The book is nonetheless eminently readable, and of manageable length; without the minutiae which can produce a dauntingly massive tome. I found it quite racy - even 'unputdownable' - not least for its fascinating glimpses of other political characters who appear, in perspective, only to enhance Kenneth Clarke's stature. The author encourages this view by his frequent use of attributed soundbites for the development of his assessment of Mr. Clarke. Perhaps this technique came easily - a little too easily? - to a biographer doubling as the editor of the BBC TV Nine O'Clock News; but serious evaluation of Mr. Clarke's political and personal development is nevertheless to be found underlying the filtered, edited comments of his interviewees. We become increasingly aware of the significance of this 'heavyweight' figure; an elusive, enigmatic, ambitious man, with no 'side', who baffled Margaret Thatcher, and whose affability and gregariousness disarmed even his political opponents. The final judgement on one who held four of the great Offices of State will be made by posterity, but Mr. Balen has given us sufficient indicators to whet the appetite for future assessments.Read more ›

If you think politcians' biographies are boring, then you obviously haven't read Malcolm Balen's fascinating account of Kenneth Clarke. Balen seems to have the art of turning the banal into the brilliant. What could have been a mundane account, Balen turns into a dazzling read; he surely must be crowned the new king of political biography. And yet, whilst many writers substitute substance with style, Balen maintains a healthy balance. Emminently readable, my normally illiterate fourteen year-old son showed an almost unhealthy appetite for this book (I fear he may be a closet conservative). If you buy one book this year, buy the fifth Harry Potter. If you buy another, buy Malcom Balen's 'Kenneth Clarke.'
