Product description

Amazon.co.uk

This amazing cross-catalogue collection is able to embody samples of all Goodman's music from its spiky beginnings in 1927 through to his experiments with bebop in 1949. Despite being more than 70 years old, the first five tracks show Goodman's clarinet at its hottest, with support from Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman, Adrian Rollini, Fats Waller and Muggsy Spanier. Then come the string of blazing swing-era big band classics, starting with Henderson's chart of "King Porter Stomp" and climaxing with the long and modernistic Eddie Sauter arrangement "Benny Rides Again" from 1940. In between come the small groups, dazzling from the quartet with Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson through to the powerful "Air Mail Special" ("Good Enough To Keep") with Charlie Christian and Cootie Williams and "Rachel's Dream" with Red Norvo and Wilson again. "Undercurrent Blues" features tenor saxist Wardell Gray and shows what a remarkable span of music the supposedly conservative Goodman embraced during his unique career. This is a remarkable jazz benchmark and the 77 minutes of music benefit from excellent sound quality. Apart from the Goodman classics, there are tracks that will delight the specialised collector. --Steve Voce
