There were a couple of quotes that really resonated with me.
"Pop gave my teens brightness and excitement and hope and oomph. Without it my life would have been dull, dull, dull, sad, sad, sad."
"......Radio Luxembourg listening was somehow illicit, fraught with danger, and hard to actually listen to because of the crackling and hissing, made it even more fantastic. It was like a secret world that I, and hundreds of thousands of other teenagers in the early 60s, shared."
I am slightly younger than Judith but I was one of those listeners - in my little bedroom in Bradford. Thank you for rolling back the years!
I laughed. I oohed and ahhed, and I was more than a little jealous. I could sympathize with her early home life and the way celebrity magazines can offer young people much more than a spicy story. They often help build dreams and give the young person a better sense of worth, as is exemplified in Keith Moon Stole My Lipstick.
This is a must-read book for anyone who lived through - or is interested in - the pop scene of the swinging 60's and 70's. From it's quirky title to the updates at the end the book has everything - humour, pathos, anecdotes about many of the major celebs of that era and some great photos. The author writes about her early years as a pop journalist with endearing humility and I particularly liked the way she uses flashbacks to her childhood to link past and present allowing the reader to share her journey through teens to young woman. I couldn't stop thinking about it which is high praise from me.....and I'm not often prompted to write reviews!
