This is such a lovely treat of a book. Do you remember the joy of doing painting as a child? I believe we all have some lovely memories of that first experience of colour, paint, brush and easel and the thrill of seeing our first marks that made the sky, the sun, the world around us come to life in front of us. The sense of achievement through the simple act of creating. This super book brings all of that experience rushing back. It has some gorgeous illustrations and not just in the literal sense. I love the way Claudia Myatt encourages you the reader to look at each moment with increasing attention and become the artist. She inspires one to be much more in the moment, whilst simultaneously encouraging the forgotten art of thoroughly engaging with your surroundings. It's almost as if she is pointing out how many interesting conversations you can have by reinterpreting your environment. In these days of selfies and instagram it feels like such a boon to be reminded that we all have a unique relationship with the world, and that our original response is a worthwhile endeavour. She exemplifies how by taking the time to record our personal experiences in our our own original way we are truly being "in the moment", savouring each morsel. This is "mindfulness" at it's personal best, a book that contains little pearls of wisdom on each page with absolutely no condescension. To enjoy it for itself is a real gift. To accept the inspiration in ways to take part in recording your own journey through life is priceless. I'm very pleased to say that I have.

As an avid traveller I have often wanted to do more than write a travel diary and have been inspired by and envious of artist friends' sketchbooks. Now I have Claudia's book and some drawing and watercolor classes under my belt, I started my own sketchbook diary on my last trip to Turkey. This is a delightful and original book on how to do this even if you have little or no experience, illustrated from Claudia's travels across the Pacific to Sydney to show you how! It is light and small so you can take it in your hand luggage and as I discovered, you don't have to be an accomplished artist to keep a sketchbook diary. Even if you don't start sketching, it will inspire you to see things differently.

What a brilliant book! It's full of tips to help beginners like me as well as people with experience and is a great inspiration. As a memento of a holiday or trip, keeping a sketchbook diary is hugely more involving and memorable than just taking photos. I love the way the author encourages us to have a go rather than aim for perfection.
