Told from both perspectives, the two main characters, Zane and Sophie, are very likeable and feel very realistic. Both are more than just their surface appearances, especially Zane who doesn’t find it easy to confide in people the truth about his past and how it still impacts on him to this day. It’s only as we see the characters evolve through natural progress of getting to know each other do their underlying issues come to the surface fully. Personally I found, given that book is mostly set over only a week, the relationship between Zane and Sophie was allowed to develop at a good pace rather than just rushing straight in, adding to the believability factor of their developing feelings in such a short period. It’s more than obvious there is a potential chemistry there from the beginning but needs the time to be allowed to grow to be fully embraced.
The book is well written and edited, with a good flow and steady pace. I loved the simple yet detailed descriptions throughout the book, allowing the reader to really envisage the picturesque setting of the book. While the timeframe of the book is short, the pace of the book is steady but never feels like it is being dragged out unnecessarily, especially given the nature of Sophie’s shy and slightly reserved personality. There isn’t a huge amount of explicit sexual content, just enough to give a little taste and satisfy readers who are looking for that kind of action in a romance book. The ending wrapped up Zane and Sophie’s story to make it a true standalone with a HEA.
Overall, if you are looking for a sweet romance with just enough tension to escape in for a few hours, I definitely recommend this book!
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley from Entangled Publishing. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.
I really liked Sophie. She can be a little clumsy, she is very shy, and being a red head she blushes very easily. She’s gawky and innocent and very, very smart, but she’s also recently decided to change her life. Where once she was a top brain researcher, now she’s a party planner, because she wants to make people smile. I have to admit this was the one thing that didn’t really add up for me. Her ultimate goal is to work for a charity, because she wants to give something back – like brain research wouldn’t have done that. More than that, though, as someone very shy myself, I found the idea of her wanting to go out and organise parties – talking to lots of people in the process – a strange choice for a super shy girl.
However, I didn’t mind because I loved the way Sophie flourishes throughout this book. She doesn’t change, she just gains in confidence. Which has rather a lot to do with Zane.
Ah, Zane, the sexy surfer. He’s hot and talented, but also sweet and kind to his fans, not to mention seriously hung up about his father. I loved how Sophie gradually got under his skin without even trying. The pair of them just get along really well, and I loved how quickly he came to admire and value her, not to mention all the different ways he thought she was beautiful. It’s so lovely.
The romance itself unfurls sweetly and slowly for most of the book and I loved the way the chemistry steadily built between them. There are real, solid reasons behind both of their feelings and even though they develop quickly, they do so with good reason and nothing about this book feels rushed in anyway. Not that this is all chaste and sweet, because things do heat up between them, but it worked perfectly with the pace.
So, if you’re looking for a sweet and sexy romance that will sweep you off your feet and carry you off to sun-kissed beaches, this will do that for you. The characters are well-rounded and likeable, the romance is beautiful and the whole experience was one I really enjoyed.
