A subtle and many-layered story, one of Nina Bawden's best (Observer)
What a consummate storymaker Nina Bawden is (Michael Morpurgo)
Nina Bawden is a longstanding author on the VMC list, but this is the first time we will publish her children's novels. Carrie's War and The Peppermint Pig are firm favourites: Keeping Henry has been out of print for years but is such a winning combination of the two earlier books that there is already an audience for this lost gem.See all Product description

If there's one aspect that seems lacking, it's the actual protagonist - she doesn't feel as fleshed-out as her brothers are, or even some of the minor characters. It may be because of the first-person viewpoint, but I don't see why that should've limited her impact on the story.
Apart from that though, it's a good book. The chapters are pretty short, as is the whole book really (about 120 pages), and the action never stays in one place for too long. I found it charming, though it doesn't strike me as something I'd want to read again in a hurry.
