Product Description

Review

This is a clearly-written, practical guide extending to 64 pages, being aimed primarily at the beginner, although the lack of an index means it can be difficult to locate informtaion. It includes coverage on the differenct varieties, which are illustrated in colour, although there is very little informaiton abotu thier genetics. --Practical Reptile Keeping Magazine

About the Author

Linda Adkins has been fascinated by pond life since earlychildhood. She is currently a senior member of staff at a large fisheries outlet specialising in ponds, wildlife and of course - axolotls. Her family lives in a rambling house with a large garden which includes three ponds, a badger set and banks of wild orchids. Her further interests range from craftwork to traditioal archery. She didn't realy mean to write this book, it started off as a short guide and just grew.

I found this book really useful for practical advice on how to keep happy and healthy axolotls. It's not a scientific treatise, it's not a research piece, it's a straight forward guide that records the experience of someone who clearly keeps very healthy animals indeed and is very enthusiastic about their care. The photos really do say it all - all of the axolotls have lovely healthy gills and strong limbs (which is very rare with youngsters - I've seen ones on sale with only one leg.) The section on tank setup and transportation was particularly handy for anyone who might ever need to move their pet without causing too much stress.

I'll be taking some of this advice with my axolotl, including getting him/her (I'm not sure which it is!) a friend to live with!

As a novice Axolotl keeper, I have found this book invaluable! Full of really great and all totally useful information, written in an easy-to-read style, not boring or stuffy, by an obviously very experienced and enthusiastic axolotl expert.

The reviewer who complained about the terminology obviously hasn't read the book, or else would see that the term 'reptile' is used as Axolotls are from a branch of lizards, but are "wholly aquatic, a unique and genuine oddity".

This book covers all the basics you need to know, and I'd highly recommend reading it before setting up a tank/purchasing your first Axolotl if you've not owned one before. I would also recommend joining the axolotl forum at caudata.cog, where you'll find many friendly and helpful people too!

I brought this as a present for my brother who is at the very early stages of looking into the possibilities of keeping Axolotls. First impressions were good, you cannot help but love the Axolotl on the front cover.

This book has given him a kick start into his research as it contains a lot information that is perfect for beginners like himself. It is full of practical and very useful advice. It as good a range of questions and answers. It is clearly laid out and it is easy to follow each section. Before I gave it to him I 'flipped' through it briefly and the photos are really nice and clear, perfectly showing off Axolotls naturally smiley faces!

Many thanks to the author, Linda Adkins, for this well written and informative book about axolotls, such a book has been long overdue. It contains a wealth of information for those new to keeping these fantastic creatures and a brilliant ground-breaking chapter on breeding for those with more experience. The information contained within this book is far superior to the arrogant bile spouted on particular caudata forums, which have an unfortunate habit of bringing those with true and informed interest in the hobby into disrepute.
I eagerly look forward to any future publications by this author.

This book has some good information on axolotls. However there are some sections which are now out dated. For instance, the gravel substrate is not recommended in an axolotl tank as they may swallow it.

This is a really good book as an introduction to axolotls, but you need to buy it BEFORE you start spending out on a tank and kit! Pity the detail on how to tell girls and boys apart isn't more detailed (maybe with diagrams) and I would have appreciated a little more on different types of food (what would be suitable, what definately isn't etc).

I'd highly recommend this book to any owners, or anyone thinking of owning an axolotl (or maybe just a fan!)
It has a lot of important information broken down into managable sections; it's clear, coherent and very informative earning my five star rating.
Not only did I enjoy reading this, aided with some great photos, but also learnt a lot.
