The story started well but there was far too much tedious and repetative build up,far too many nasty rape and masturbation scenes which i found very uncomfortable to read and then suddenly the book ended in about six pages leaving me feeling i had lost a couple of chapters somewhere.
Not a book i would recommend.
My biggest quibble is the main character himself. Unlikabke, totally self obsessed, humourless, rude, arrogant, and not to forget his ridiculous talent 'to feel what the killer must have felt' due to his past experiences. I was about to quit when, at some point, two other characters discuss Corrigans talent and one of them serouisly asked if Corrigan was psychic. I just skipped through the last chapters.
My other big problem with this book is the repated description of rape and masturbation to the point where I thought 'ok, ive read this before. Why again and again?' I do understand the necessity to describe it the first time round to show the absolute horrific nightmare these women go through, and it did make me feel sick, but by the third time it simply felt gratuitous and completely unnecessary.
Im done with this author.
In this book we see DI Sean Corrigan try to get into the depraved mind of abductor and murderer Thomas Keller and what a nasty nasty mind it is too.
DI Corrigan is of course a fantastic lead character, full of mystery and intelligence but it was also great how his sidekick Sally's character is developed. Being a girlie, it's good to have a female character to be able to relate to.
All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good, gritty crime novel ☺
I shall not be buying any more books in this series. After a few chapters, you can see which way the book is heading in its storyline, and can virtually "write it in your own mind." Very predictable, to anyone with an imaginative mind that is reading it.
The main POVs come from Detective Sean Corrigan, the perpetrator Thomas Keller and the victim Louise Russell; there are a few other minor POVs that offer a great deal of insight into the main characters. However, Delaney doesn't reveal the source of Keller's behavior until the very end. Readers must follow the bread crumbs along with Corrigan.
There were sections of the book where the descriptions seemed to be dragging on, and the conversations between characters seemed a bit forced, but the novel held my attention from beginning to end. The epilogue made me realize that Corrigan is a character from a series; unfortunately, this detail has been left out of the marketing in the US. I don't understand why publishers think they have to use different book covers and descriptions for the UK & US.
This author would probably do much better in the US if the marketing mentioned that this is part of a series. I had no idea this is "Book 2" until I came to the Amazon UK site.
Sean seems to be being watched by his superiors- not quite sure what this was about - hence four stars and not five.
