I cannot be the only new beekeeper who is lacking in knowledges and experience, but at the same time is uneasy about the amount of chemical usage in the 'received wisdom' of the local bee keepers society. Joe has written a book that supports my feelings, but with the knowledge of one who has practised what he preaches for a few years and knows what he is talking about. He also has the honesty to admit that there is a cost to being chemical free - everything is not plain sailing and that sometimes colonies will be lost.

I only wish that he had written a longer book with more detail on the annual cycle of bee keeping - as it is I shall be going back to this one frequently, and following up his recommended reading list.

Very interesting book but I wish I had known that the writing was going to be so faint I could hardly read it, because then I would have bought the printed copy!! Very, very disappointing.

Excellent read and makes one think about the way you are taking care of your bees.

I expected more on chemical treatment free beekeeping from a book called "Keep Bees Without Fuss or Chemicals" There is very little info on this and no in depth at all. Mostly its about hive management from spring to autumn and even this is done without depth. Very basic info on conventional beekeeping. The author talks a bit about top bar hives claiming some stuff and not stating weather he kept bees in them or not (I presume not). All in all a book to avoid since there a re tons of books much better writen on conventional beekeeping then this one. I found link to this book on the Bees for Development home page and Im not sure why they have it there since there are much better books available. Very very very disappointed indeed.
