Appealing and imaginative mini-introduction to Art History (Bournemouth Daily Echo)
Katie is engaging, mischievous, adventurous and playful ... a great book to read aloud (The Bookbag)
The illustrations are mini-masterpieces and bring the story to life beautifully (Families (Bristol))
The formula for Katie's entry into the world of each painting is never forced and the author manages to maintain a balance between pastiche ad personal visual language through a genuine empathy with the formal qualities of the paintings (Books For Keeps)
'James Mayhew's beautifully illustrated Katie and the British Artists not only provides an engaging context within which to introduce children to some of history's most important artists, but is also a great stimulus for exciting cross-curicular work.' (Junior Education Plus)
A fantastic read with fabulous illustrations (Kid Around)
Mayhew's series has been much imitated but what distinguishes these books from the rest is the painterly sensitivity with which the transition from painting to narrative backdrop is handled. (Books For Keeps)
Another classic Katie adventure from James Mayhew, featuring the great British artists: Turner, Constable, Stubbs and Gainsborough.See all Product Description

The National Gallery is definitely family friendly and the information desks have a sheet they can print out telling you were you can find the pictures that appear in the Katie books although not all the information staff know about this yet. Not all the pictures featured in the Katie books are there (the Mona Lisa for example - but you knew that :) ) but they do have a sizable wedge of them. And did I mention admission is free - although they do ask for donations which seems only fair.
Children loved it.
