About Katharine Osborne
Katharine Osborne is a non-fiction and fiction writer. She endeavors to make dry technical and scientific information engaging and her fiction engrossing. Her current obsession is her Playlist project, where she wrote a short story day for a year based on a song in her iPod playlist (there happened to be 365 of them the day she decided to start). No time period is off the table, and no trope or cliche character is safe from dissection and reassembly.
Katharine's writing idols are Joyce Carol Oates and Ray Bradbury. She also likes J. K. Rowling, Charles Foster Wallace, Kurt Vonnegut, and Jane Austen, among many others too numerous to list.
Her main goal in life is to encourage people to think critically and act mindfully.
The playlist stories run the gamut from telling the tale of a hustler polar bear stranded by the side of the road in Nevada to a western school teacher trying to wring funding for her school from an unsympathetic saloon. Retirees do battle from their Winnebagos, a couple finds commitment through home renovation, and British soldiers battle tripods from Mars in the trenches of World War I. A medieval monk escapes the drudgery of illuminating books for an illiterate nobleman through time travel, protestors wordlessly take down a government, an artist gets uppity with "the man", and an abductee fends off her otherworldly captor. Genres are explored and exploded and tropes are twisted and mangled. A theme of awakening and realization runs throughout as characters are tested at their moments of destiny.
