A well written history. At times the cast becomes confusing but given the total chaos that reigned in Congo that is unsurprising. The book gets the balance right of narrative history with individuals accounts. Just occasionally there is a touch much purple prose but generally good reading.

"Katanga 1960-63" by Christopher Othen has fulfilled the huge gap on Congo Wars subject, taking once and for all totally neutral approach to the Katanga failed bid for independence. Othen is taking us to the murky world of weapons dealers, african politics of postcolonial scramble for power and world powers engaged in the Congo chaos in the years after independence granted in 1960 by Belgium. In this fabulous book we can find the traces of the work of many special services (Belgium, France, USSR, USA, Portugal, South Africa etc.) proving that "Katanga affair" has not been as one-sided mercenary/colonial backward coup, as we have been lead to believe for years. Not to mention fantastic work Christopher Othen has done on describing backside of the rebellion, including underestimated impact by belgian settlers community on Katanga 2.5 years of independence. We can also see the cynical United Nations role in the crushing of the Katanga. I will recommend this book to anybody, who is interested in postcolonial wars and the history of Africa.

Very accurate account of what was happening there at that time. Served there during the early 1960's doubtful that all the history at that time will never be told, not many of us left.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! 14 Jan. 2016
By Dr.L - Published on Amazon.com

This is an excellent book. Factual, thorough and well written. As one who knew some of the participants in the Katanga secession, I found Othen's retelling remarkably similar to some of the events as later described to me. Othen's narrative is rich in detail and his battle descriptions gripping reading.

However, the best of this book is the author's writing skills. He is an artist with words. He writes in a fluid manner and his descriptions of the "dramatis personae" are often irreverent and sarcastic, but always witty. I enjoyed this book and finished it in a few hours. I strongly recommend this book. I cannot wait to this author's next effort.

Extremely well written with a great mix of sources. Really paints a clear picture on a confusing situation. Just be prepared to get lost on slightly confusing tribal names.

Entertaining. Very well written with some historic elements of significant value. Typically with an anti-UN bias.
