I knew I would probably have to spend a bit more to get some waterproof ones and had heard that Karrimor were a great brand. I was thrilled to see these on here at a bargain price - I notice they have now doubled from what I paid. I read the previous reviews and was worried about which size to get so I went to an outdoors shop to try some on. I tried on a size 8 - my normal size - and it was too small, by quite a lot.
I, therefore, ordered a size 9 from Amazon. When they arrived they were too big! I sent them back to Amazon, which was relatively painless, and ordered a replacement in a size 8.5. They arrived and are a better fit lengthways. I have to say though they are large around my ankles. I don't know if I have skinny ankles, but I can get my fingers down the side of the boot. I have decided to keep them though as they were a reasonable price.
They are comfortable, light and seem to be well made. I like that they have got rivets for the laces all the way up the boot. My previous boots didn't have this. I also have wide feet and this isn't a problem.
I haven't had a chance to test out how waterproof they are because, somewhat surprisingly, it hasn't rained! They seem to be ok in the damp though. I will update my review once I have had a chance to test this. It will be interesting to see how they cope with the snow we are supposed to have this week!
I am pleased with the boots for what I paid but they are oddly sized and I don't think one piece of advice will suit everyone. For me, I didn't need a size up like other reviews have suggested, only half a size. My advice would be to try some on from a shop first.
I think my next pair of walking boots will be from a shop where I can try them on. I certainly don't think these are so much of a bargain at their current price and you could probably get some from an outdoors shop at a similar price, without worrying if they are going to fit.
EDIT 20/01/12 - Have now worn these for a couple of weeks and they are relatively good. They have kept my feet dry in the recent snow and are extremely comfortable. I haven't needed to wear these in.
My only complaint is that they don't feel as sturdy as my previous pair. I have slipped in the snow as they just don't seem to have as good a grip.
Pros: Comfortable, cheap, waterproof so far, reasonable foot support, good grip,
Cons: The insoles creep backwards with every step, leaving an ever increasing ridge inside at the front. I resorted to sticking them permanently in place with spray on carpet adhesive.
The closed eyelets are sharp at the edges ie not rounded. This means that the laces won't slide through when you pull on them when trying to close the boot, which you won't do. So unless they are a snug fit to start with then it's a problem.
Finally, the last pair of eyelets (forgetting the four open ones which are ok) which because of this, are under the greatest strain, will eventually cut them through..
But they're ok for the money.
These came as a replacement for a similar pair of boots made by Hi-Tec, which leaked within two weeks.
My previous pair of boots, again Hi-Tec, lasted two years and over a thousand miles of hiking. I don't know what's gone wrong with the manufacturing since then but I just can't keep my feet dry.
