If anything I enjoyed this even more than part one, I think because I had become accustomed to the style. I found the development of the story fascinating and totally believable and although the plot moved backwards and forwards in time I had no difficulty in following it. The author might like to proof read both books again as some errors have crept in. Thank you for an enjoyable read, I look forward to Book Three.

When I reviewed the first book, most of my review was about me, about how surprised I was at actually liking a fantasy book. And, no, I haven't liked any fantasy since I read it, so it's definitely this specific series I like.

Honestly, Derek surpasses himself with the sequel. It's a much smoother read than the first, the action is upped, the plot thickens, with even more surprises and unpredictable twists. I was captivated from page one where we follow Karl in captivity, by more than one party, and we meet the people trying to help him - sometimes for his sake and sometimes for their own personal gain. We're never really sure, and nothing is simple and we're not told everything from the beginning. Just like the mythology of the guardians and how their essence pass on to grandchildren of their own gender is only explained and expanded on slowly throughout the story. It's a very interesting idea and a main drive in the dilemmas the characters face. That, and the great evil that is trying to rise, and unfortunately for Karl, he's somehow involved in it all...

Definitely recommended for anyone who wants a thrilling and unpredictable fantasy story.

Having enjoyed the first volume a lot I looked forward to this but found it hard going; not from a prose point of view, but the subject was simply too demanding, when so much fantasy writing can be so unbearably bleak. This reader hopes that the third (final?) volume will restore a little spark to what was otherwise a promising series

The second trip into the life of Karl is even better than the first. From street gangs to high wizards the characters are deep and believable.

This being a genre I like to live in, the cast seem familiar and easy to identify with but unexpected twists are around the corner, its never a good idea to pigeon hole a Kettlety character.

A real page turner that makes you slow down in case you miss something.

Loving it.

Can't wait for number three.
